JOB DESCRIPTION:

Provides Rehabilitation Counseling services for special education students 14-22 years of age; provides technical assistance in the area of Transition as defined in IDEA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Develops Transition Plans that include: post-secondary goals, age appropriate assessment, a coordinated set of activities, course of study and outside agency connections if needed.
  • Adheres to the National Technical Assistance Center on Transition approved standards, IDEA, and NM Statute §300.43 Transition services.
  • Counsels students with disabilities regarding transition assessment results and postsecondary goals related to education/training, employment, and independent living if appropriate.
  • Serves as a facilitator with agency representatives to provide information for students and parents to help transition students from public school services to adult services/agencies.
  • Provides consultation to special education staff in regard to transition planning and interagency linkages for students on IEPs with disabilities.
  • Ensures transition services consider the impact and needs of students with disabilities related to multicultural, diversity issues and other outside factors
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations in-person, virtually, through email/messaging and on the telephone.
  • Knowledge of APS community, computer system, financial and legal requirements.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects and coordinate the work of others.
  • Knowledge of District policies on immunization, medication, first aid, emergencies and child abuse/neglect.
  • Five years of experience in special education, vocational training or related area providing services to students with disabilities.
  • Professional training and experience in vocational evaluation, rehabilitation counseling, special education teaching or areas related to outcome based education preferred.
REQUIREMENTS:

The minimum requirements for this job are as follows:

  • Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, vocational evaluation, counseling, special education, psychology, transition or related field.
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license.
  • Valid Rehabilitation Counseling License issued from the NM Public Ed. Department
