JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Safety Supervisor assists the Safety Manager to implement safety and training policies within the Transportation Department. They will be responsible for directly working with Safety Trainers to make sure drivers and attendants adhere to implemented policies. This position will act as the main liaison for trainees throughout the onboarding and training.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Incumbent must achieve the following outcomes with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Works closely and collaboratively with the Safety Manager to ensure the provision of training and safety regulations are executed.
  • Supervise SBDI’s and Safety Trainer documentation in order to maintain compliance with NM PED and DOT.
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining standards for universal driver/attendant on-boarding, training, first aid, and defensive driving.
  • Assist safety manager in developing a yearly in-service training program for all required employees and contractors.
  • Interviews new driver and attendant prospects and makes follow-ups when needed.
  • Notifies drivers and attendants of dates approaching such as physical, license, and first aid expirations to avoid lapse.
  • Implement the safety awareness program.
  • Maintains professional relationships and works cooperatively with employees, the community, and other professionals.
  • Maintains professional competence through individual and staff training, in-service educational activities, and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Attends and/or conducts staff meetings and participates on committees within area of responsibility.
  • Responds to concerns and prepares correspondence to principals, parents, and community members regarding safety to ensure the safe and efficient transportation for students, including evaluating needs and requirements, explaining policies and procedures; and ensuring that accurate information is communicated to all involved parties.
  • Proactively works with Safety Manager and HR to form recruiting plans for school bus drivers and attendants.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of professional development activities for bus personnel and supervisory staff.
  • Responds to accidents during regular hours of service.
  • Works with Risk Management on any accident investigations to ensure all information is secured and maintained and represents the district transportation with depositions and other related cases.
  • Assist in reviewing and creating accident reports and send to all required agencies.
  • Maintain CDL class B with P and S endorsements and meet all DOT drug test requirements.
  • Drives bus routes and dispatches when needed.
  • Performs other duties assigned.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Effective communication skills, both, verbal and written.
  • Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal skills with diverse populations’ in-person and on the telephone.
  • Thorough knowledge of the streets and road system of the metropolitan area, including knowledge of outdoor education sites, local museums, and other ancillary sites for extracurricular activities.
  • Ability to operate a computer, or to learn to operate a computer, concerning the routing of special needs students.
  • Experience in routing and driving of special needs students.
  • Ability to temporarily assume responsibility covering outside events during emergencies.
  • Ability to perform quickly and efficiently a wide range of standard office clerical tasks.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

  • The incumbent will work with various APS staff members in a team environment including the administrative staff, State Department personnel, APS legal counsel, parents, students, advocates, and others outside the district.
  • Frequent interactions with people in person and on the phone will be necessary.
  • Travel from location to location will be necessary.
  • Duties are performed in various locations throughout the school district.
  • The employee must be able to work in all types of environments indoors and outdoors where various hazards are present including weather, hot and cold conditions, slippery and wet surfaces, chemicals and construction materials, and various power sources and radiant energy.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Associate degree OR High school diploma/equivalent and 5 years safety or training experience.
  • 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • 2 years of experience building spreadsheets and power points.
  • Possession of a valid NM State driving license with a clean driving record.
  • Must obtain CDL Class B with P and S endorsements within 60 days of hire.
  • First Aid/CPR certification obtained within 60 days of hire.
  • SBDI Instructor within 90 days of hire.
