Building-level staff member (licensed teacher or school counselor) who supports the academic achievement of middle
school and high school students. Focus areas for this position include college and career readiness elective courses,
oversight of credit recovery programs, alternative pathways, Ohio Means Jobs completion, career exploration through field
trips and in school presentations, and other career readiness activities.
Characteristics of an Effective College and Career Specialist:
● Possesses expertise in planning, implementing, and managing graduation efforts of students.
● Views this role as an integral part of his/her responsibilities.
● Feels responsible for the success of campuses and students in transition and graduation..
● Supports all components of the School Improvement Plan (SIP)
● Has a direct line of contact with the building principal and other critical district personnel.
● Has successful leadership and teaching experience.
● Understands current graduation requirements.
● Views self as a positive change agent.
● Practices strong communication skills
● Enjoys interacting with a variety of students, families, and community members..
Roles and Responsibilities of the College and Career Specialist:
● Ensures the participation of all students in traditional or alternative pathways to graduation.
● Assists in developing interventions for students who are credit deficient..
● Works collaboratively with middle school and high school teachers to evaluate student data..
● Ensures effective implementation of all components of the pathways to graduation..
● Monitors the progress of individual student academic and graduation plans.
● Possesses extensive knowledge of data analysis and process monitoring.
● Effectively and frequently communicates with the school and district teams to identify areas for improvement related to college and career readiness..
● Removes barriers that may hinder the student’s academic progress. .
● Provides support and feedback to the principals as needed or requested.
● Takes an active role in problem-solving with campus and/or district leadership teams.
● Collaborates with community partners and seeks out new resources within the community.
● Assists in efforts to increase community and parental involvement.
● Has knowledge of all school and/or district improvement requirements.
● Partners with campuses to generate a positive school culture.
● Attends required training.
● Has knowledge of board policy.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
● Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with licensure in education or school counseling.
Experience:
● At least three years (3) teaching experience
● Some experience in teaching and/or advising students on graduation requirements.
● Experience coordinating projects, resources, and programs.
● Must possess outstanding leadership and relation skills.
License/Certification:
● Must have a current license/certification as a teacher, school counselor, or school administrator in the State of Ohio.
Essential Job Functions:
● Must be able to travel between district facilities when scheduled to do so
● Must be able to lift 25lbs.
● Must be able to function in a typical school setting.
● Mobility within the school including movement from floor to floor.
● Travel via car may be required to perform this job.
● Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when school or district needs warrant
● Must be able to access information using a computer.
● Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.
● Effectively cope with stressful situations
● Strong mental acuity
● Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job.
● Other essential functions and marginal job functions are subject to modification.
