Collects municipal yard waste, electronic, and refuse from residences. Work is performed as a member of a sanitation collection crew and includes loading waste into a truck and washing and steam cleaning collection trucks. Work occurs in all weather conditions and may include working holidays and working overtime. Work is managed by Public Works Solid Waste Crew Leader and supervised by the Public Works Street Superintendent. and is evaluated for efficiency and work completion according to department and community standards of assigned routes.

• Works as a team on a solid waste collection truck; inspects waste to avoid collecting contaminated and hazardous waste; moves or picks up solid waste from curb and places in/on truck; cleans loose debris around carts and curbs; handles electronic items and preps for proper disposal.
• Assists with disposing of solid waste at landfill. 
• Provides labor to other personnel in the removal and transport of brush and limbs, yard waste, electronic recycling; may be assigned to help with chipping operations or other public works duties as assigned.
• Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas as sanitation equipment operator backs up truck; spots for driver when necessary. 
• May perform routine and unskilled preventive maintenance on equipment; cleans solid waste collection vehicles including tasks such as washing, steaming, and cleaning interior. 
• Operates a personal tablet to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing a database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions. 
• Performs other tasks as assigned and/or as needed for the Public Works Department.

High school diploma or GED required; any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 
Specific License or Certification

• Must possess a minimum of a Class A driver’s license.
• Ability to learn routes and navigate in the City of Albemarle. 

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required to communicate with other workers and the public. Hearing is required to perceive spoken words and other sounds encountered in the course of work (sirens, automobiles, horns, and others). Visual acuity is required for moving equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work performed, and observing general surroundings and activities to ensure safety.
