The Position Licensed Deckhand / Zodiac Captain

Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Mate, executes duties to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of the vessel. Stand watches for navigation purposes with the Bridge Watch Officer and operate small inflatable tenders and DIBs as directed by the Chief Mate for transportation of guests on scenic rides and transportation to and from shore.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Work according to the core Values of True Alaskan Hospitality as defined in our Mission Statement: Immerse each guest in personable and unsurpassed level of service we call True Alaskan Hospitality.

• Under the direction of the Chief Mate, handle mooring lines during docking and un-docking procedures, handle anchor winches during anchor procedures, setting, taking and securing the gangway and ensure its safety for guest and crew use and assist them while using the gangway.
• Perform watch duties while underway, anchored or in-port as assigned by the Chief Mate.
• Holds a position on the ship’s Emergency Station Bill. Must meet requirements of Emergency Station Bill for both drills and actual emergencies to include fire, flooding, man overboard, abandon ship, medical, and spill response.
• Perform a variety of tasks as assigned by the Chief Mate. These may include janitorial duties, upkeep and maintenance of the vessel as well as guest services.
• Perform engineering and security rounds as directed by Chief Mate and Chief Engineer.
• While on watch on the bridge, assist officer on watch as directed. Specific duties such as steering, chart work, lookout, and use of bridge electronics will vary with the areas of operation and with the officer of the watch. When on duty on the bridge, those duties shall take precedence over all else and will require the utmost vigilance.
• While in port, perform duties such as but not limited to assist in baggage handling, laundry loading and un-loading, taking on potable water, taking off garbage, cleaning windows and vessel wash down.
• On turnaround day, responsible for taking on ship’s stores and assisting with baggage movements and cleaning all exterior areas that cannot be completed while underway.
• Interacting with guests in a friendly and courteous manner always. Provide friendly and professional service while assisting guests on and off the vessel at the gangway, while escorting guests to their stateroom, while working on stateroom maintenance projects, while performing safety rounds, and while the bridge is open to the guests.
• Enhance guest experience by actively searching for wildlife and bringing sightings to the attention of the officer on watch and the Naturalist.
• Safe operation of zodiacs and DIB’s, with or without guests, and their daily upkeep while working in conjunction with the vessel engineer.
• Follows prescribed hours set forth by the vessel’s daily roster.
• Maintain awareness of basic safety rules, work place safety and respect for the environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications * Licensing of 25 GT/ Inland

• 1-3 years in the maritime industry with progressively responsible experience.
• Strong communication skills: verbal, non-verbal and written.
• Writing skills capable of completing forms and making log entries
• Strong interpersonal skills and guest service aptitude
• Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Crew stays in shared quarters onboard with little privacy and relatively constant vibration and engine noise often for long periods of time. This is a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with a diverse workforce. Crew may be moved from one vessel to another at the discretion of Management. Due to remote locations of vessel routes, internet connectivity is limited. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Physical Demands

Travel to the vessels in Alaska and extended stay up to 5 months on board is required. Must be physically able to work a typical workday of about 10-14 hours per day, seven days a week. Environmental conditions generally include ambient inside temperature, ambient inside lighting, ambient to loud noise levels, all weather conditions, occasional use of required protective clothing including raingear and life preserver. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to walk on uneven deck surfaces crossing from vessel to vessel. Physically able to climb a 7-foot vertical ladder and fit through a 28-inch escape hatch.

A Little About Us
Allen Marine, the parent company of Alaskan Dream Cruises, was established in 1970 when Bob and Betty Allen, and their five children, restored a ruined boat that became the St. Michael- the first in a long line of Allen Marine tour vessels named after saints of the family’s Russian Orthodox faith.

By working together, the Allen’s were able to keep pace with Alaska’s rapidly expanding tourism industry. The Allen Marine tours of today are highly professional, staffed with well-trained crews, and guided by gifted naturalists. While altogether more polished marine tours than in the days when Betty and her children served treats and dispensed Russian tea from a samovar while Bob ran the boat, Allen Marine remains a company owned, operated, and guided by a family of life-long Alaskans.

Allen Marine’s success can be traced to Bob and Betty’s competitive drive, creativity, ingenuity, and good timing. But the most important ingredient is family. In the early years, as the couple struggled to keep their business afloat, their children worked beside them—cleaning, crewing, and later, skippering the vessels. Bob and Betty’s children and grandchildren now run the company.

Bob Allen is fond of saying, “Just because it hasn’t been done before, doesn’t mean we can’t do it,” a can-do attitude reflected in the boats Allen Marine designs, builds, and operates. The operating characteristics of these one-of-a-kind tour vessels so impressed NY Waterways of Weehawken, New Jersey, that the Allens were commissioned to build a total of 19 passenger ferries. When Flight 1549 crash-landed on the Hudson River, half of the boats surrounding the sinking jet had been built in Sitka, Alaska. The rescue effort, greatly aided by the fast and highly maneuverable Allen Marine ferries, put the “miracle” in “Miracle on the Hudson.”

The sale of 19 vessels to NY Waterway represents the largest single export of manufactured products in the history of the 49th state. But it is just one of the remarkable achievements of this uniquely Alaskan family and the company they run. Allen Marine operates over 30 vessels, employs more than 300 Alaskans, and provides daily and week-long tours and cruises throughout Southeast Alaska, while building aluminum boats and structural products at its boat shop in Sitka.

GETTING HERE AND GETTING AROUND*

Our bases of operation are surrounded by wilderness; exclusively accessible from the outside world by Alaska Airlines or the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Service. Alaskan Dream Cruises offers transportation assistance for manager level positions only.

Juneau is the state capital (population; 32,000) with miles of road carved along the coast. A limited public bus system that connects the main commerce centers but does not extend far outside the main city limits. Public transportation ends 1.5 miles from our facility. It is recommended to bring a vehicle to Juneau or consider purchasing a used vehicle (usually ample availability!). Car-pooling and bike-commuting among crew members is very common.

Ketchikan is Alaska’s “Salmon Capital” and the fourth largest city (population: 14,000) in the state. There is a public bus system that connects the main commerce centers but does not extend far outside the main city limits. It is possible to live comfortably in Ketchikan without a vehicle, but it is recommended that you at least bring a bike to get around town.

Sitka, Alaska’s first capital, is considered to be one of Alaska’s most picturesque and historically fascinating communities (population: 9,000). Sitka is a very pedestrian and bike-friendly town with 7 miles of road in each direction from the downtown area. Local bus service is also available.

FOR FUN

Southeast Alaska boasts countless glaciers, remote islands, an abundance of wildlife and small communities with a whole lot of heart! Kayaking, hiking, biking, camping, boating and fishing are just a few favorite local activities to indulge in on your time off. Local recreation centers offer activities from swimming and racquetball to martial arts and belly dancing. Explore our towns by attending a wide variety of festivals and performances scheduled throughout the summer featuring local and visiting artists. Browse local galleries, museums and libraries for a glimpse into the cultural panorama, or just join your friends for a sunset campfire (a must-do!).
