Job Summary and Qualifications

As a highly-skilled Registered Nurse – First Assist in the OR you will provide excellent patient care to individuals during operative and invasive procedures. Under the direction of the OR Manager you will work with other members of the team to ensure the operating room is adequately prepared for procedures. Our team works hard to support each other, we are looking for an amazing nurse who feels patient care is as meaningful as we do. In this role:

  • You will have advanced knowledge and skills advanced based on the RNFA recommended training and completed competencies as outlined by AORN and the First Assisting Program.
  • You will practice at the direction of the surgeon and does not concurrently function as a scrub nurse.
  • You will anticipate the needs of the surgical team during an operation, assist the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, holding open incisions, stopping bleeding, closing the incision, among other technical tasks.
  • You will rely on previous experience to anticipate and meet the needs of the surgeon.
  • You will participate in harvesting of saphenous veins after completing additional education acceptable to the Board, including supervised practice under direct supervision of the operating physician.
  • You will be consistently ready and prepared for assigned cases.
  • You will appropriately respond to the patient in an emergency or physically distressful situation.
  • You will facilitate communications between patient, surgeon, and OR staff and family and other departments as needed.
  • You will give a thorough report of patient’s intraoperative condition to PACU nurse.
  • You will follow patient and employee safety/security policies and protocols, including hand hygiene, use of universal precautions, use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to isolation procedures
  • You will act in a composed and professional manner, especially under pressure.
What qualifications you will need:
  • Current State of Alaska Registered Nurse License.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Life Support Course (ALS or ACLS) and Certification.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Pediatric Life Support Course (PALS) and Certification.
  • Current certificate in surgical assisting from NBSTSA, ABSA, NASC, or NSAA preferred.
  • Current certificate in perioperative nursing (CNOR) required.
  • One or more years of OR experience required
  • Successful completion of a surgical first assistant program that meets the minimum standards for an educational program established by AORN
  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
