Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has a hiring preference for qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.

Summary:

Under general direction provides professional nursing services to accomplish the individual patient plan of care; independently and consistently using the nursing process to safely, therapeutically, and efficiently care for a full assignment of patients with subtle and sometimes unidentified needs. Supports the operations of the Alaska Native Medical Center and programs.

Responsibilities:

The functions of the Registered Nurse are to independently and consistently use nursing knowledge, collect patient health data, analyze the data to determine diagnoses, identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient, develop a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain the expected outcomes, implement the interventions identified in the plan of care, and evaluate the patient’s progress toward attainment of the outcomes, working collaboratively with the healthcare team.

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse, the OR Team Lead is responsible for the work flow in a specific operating room, maintaining high standards of care, correcting deficiencies, and remaining aware of the patient’s need for comfort, privacy, and safety.

Delivers timely and effective nursing care according to established standards including physical, social, and emotional care. Performs nursing assessments, interventions, and evaluations and accurately completes all required nursing documentation.

Directs the day to day activities of support staff.

Performs and records counts of all countable items and ensures par levels are maintained for supplies.

Collaborates will all necessary staff members, including sterile processing, supply, vendors, and surgeon regarding supplies and equipment needed. Communicates with pre and post-op staff as needed regarding patient care and ensures all legal and department specific paperwork is complete.

Performs preoperative patient assessments prior to transporting patients to surgery and assists anesthesia during induction as needed.

Helps to position the patient for surgery, maintaining proper body alignment and patient safety, and takes actions to maintain the patient’s normothermia.

Prepares the patient’s skin at the operative site, pre- and post-operatively as needed. Assesses patient skin integrity and responds appropriately to any changes during care.

Ensures accurate labeling, preparation, and collection of all specimens and ensures proper handling and transport.

Responsible to ensure all members of the surgical team are active participants of the time out process. Performs a sign out with the provider for each case.

Constantly reassesses needs including the patient’s condition and the progress of the procedure, providing emergency equipment and supplies as needed. Monitors blood loss and responds appropriately.

Monitors sterile field and takes appropriate action as needed. Administers medications and solutions to sterile field as ordered and ensures proper labeling, preparation, and collection of all specimens. Ensures safe handling and proper transport of specimens.

Participates in orientation and training of new personnel.

Performs other duties as assigned.

· Knowledge of nursing science, principles, techniques, and procedures for the care of patients.

· Knowledge of healthcare terminology, anatomy, physiology, and concepts of disease.

· Skill in critical thinking to provide effective and compassionate nursing care, assessing patient situations, and taking effective courses of action.

· Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple requests by patients, families, and team members.

· Skill in evaluating health problems and making recommendations based on observations.

· Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Associate degree in nursing. Equivalent knowledge, experience, education, or training may be substituted for education. Must have participated in 30 hours every 2 years continuing education in nursing in general, 16 of which are in the specific area of practice.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

Specific experience may be required for each work area.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

· Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska.

· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card.

· All other certifications as required for specific work area: New Employees must obtain the required certifications within six months of hire; New graduates must obtain the required certifications within 18 months of hire; Contract and MOA employees must come to us with the required training completed as outlined in their individual contracts/MOAs, and must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Alaska and remain active with all annual licensing requirements.

PREFERRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

National certification is preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

· Depending on the needs of the organization , some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional certifications or training in one or more specialty areas.
