Summary: Provides oversight of the activities on a nursing unit during a specific shift including serving as a resource to staff, directing patient flow, precepting or mentoring staff, assuring appropriate utilization of resources, and providing oversight for the provision of quality care in a manner satisfying to patients.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs all duties included in the registered nurse job description.
  • Evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statues and regulations, identifying short and long-term professional goals.
  • Maintains current knowledge, serves as a resource on departmental policies, procedures and processes, and assists in assuring compliance.
  • Assists in finding creative solutions to issues and contributes knowledge to process and quality improvement.
  • Utilizes the ANA scope and standards practice and the code of ethics for nurses with interpretive statements as the foundation of nursing practice.
  • Mentors other in areas such as competency, documentation, equipment use, plan of care, National Patient Safety Goals and participation in in-service education
  • Exhibits a general understanding of the process for dealing with ethical dilemmas, understand, and coordinates the process for obtaining an ethics consult.
  • Coordinates patient flow on the unit to facility the provision of timely and effective care
  • Expedites admission process for ready beds when assigned
  • Provides and ensures quality patient care
  • Communicates effectively with patients and families to resolve issues and provides service recovery when needed.
  • Participates in daily rounds and other patient satisfaction activities.
  • Performs routine environment of care rounds and facilitates resolution of issues.

  • Assures appropriate utilization of staff on unit by preparing staff schedules, overseeing staffing for shift and making patient assignments to meet patient needs in an efficient and cost effective manner

  • Establishes effective work relationships with staff and supports action plans in meeting staff satisfaction goals.
  • Understands, articulates, supports and serves as a resource for the components of the nursing bundle. Including observation and coaching of staff.
  • Maintains professional, effective and timely communication with physicians, other departments, (fast track) patients and families, staff, EMS partners and community members.
  • Provides departmental leadership in the absence of the unit director/manager/supervisor.
  • Meets or exceeds productivity standards Assures patient flow is efficient.
  • Distributes staff resources to meet patient occupancy
  • Role model for teamwork, fills beds, cleans beds, assists others with their assignment, facilitates admissions, recognizes when staff members are overwhelmed and adjusts assignment according; balances assignments, delegates appropriately.
  • Assists in providing positive impressions to patients and visitors, promotes a caring and compassionate approach to all interactions.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

An Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Equivalent knowledge, experience, education, or training may be substituted for education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

1-year nursing experience in area of specialty or previous charge nurse or supervisory experience

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

Current registered nurse license in the State of Alaska.

Current Basic Life Support card required.

All other certifications as required for specific work area: New Employees must obtain the required Certifications within six months of hire; Contract and MOA employees must come to us with the required training completed as outlined in their individual contracts/MOAs, and must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Alaska and remain active with all annual licensing requirements.
