JOB TITLE: Student Life Professional Intern
DEPARTMENT: Student Life
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Life
STATUS: Full-time, Stipend, Exempt (Grand Funded Position), 9 Month

PURPOSE: The Residence Life/Student Development Professional Intern role at Alaska Christian College involves shadowing, learning, assisting, and serving the Student Life staff and the on-campus student community. This position works closely with the Director of Student Life, Resident Directors, and Assistant Resident Directors. Responsibilities include administering policies and procedures, leading student programming, addressing transportation needs, organizing social and recreational opportunities within a Christian atmosphere, and mentoring student leaders. Additionally, housing and meals are provided as part of this position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Service and Presence: The intern serves both the Student Life department and the on-campus student community while residing in a staff apartment on campus.
  • Policy Administration: Assists in administering policies and procedures.
  • Student Engagement: Takes the lead in organizing and facilitating student programming.
  • Spiritual Oversight: Oversees components related to Spiritual Life.
  • Collaboration: Works closely with Resident Directors (RDs) and Assistant Resident Directors (ARDs) to support their effectiveness in their respective roles.
  • Social and Recreational Opportunities: Creates social and recreational events within a Christian context.
  • Availability: Remains available to students during assigned duty hours.
  • Conflict Resolution: Mediates interpersonal conflicts among students.
  • Spiritual Leadership: Leads Bible studies and mentors small groups as needed.
  • Transportation Support: Provides transportation assistance for students.
  • Safety and Security: Conducts regular rounds to ensure resident safety and secure areas.
  • Additional Contributions: May serve in other areas as approved by the Director of Student Life.

REQUIREMENTS:1. AA is required; completion of a Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

4. Strong communication skills and ability to motivate students
5. Experience serving and mentoring young adults with understanding of group behavior/dynamics.
6. Good knowledge of the position and ability to make decisions affecting others.
7. Must demonstrate a strong cultural sensitivity and awareness.
8. Proven team-building and problem-solving skills with a teachable spirit.
9. Ability to keep a positive attitude with students and staff alike despite circumstances.
10. Must understand and maintain the confidentiality of all information acquired during duties.
11. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
12. Must be able to work independently and show good judgment.
13. Needs to be organized and show good time management skills.
14. Must be reliable and dependable with regular, timely attendance.
15. Able to meet the demands of an extraordinary schedule.
16. Must be able to maintain emotional health and create self-care plans.
17. Must be willing to take time for positive reflection and self-care activities on and off campus.
18. Must be able to pass a background check.
19. ACC is an Evangelical Covenant organization. Employees are required to sign a document
agreeing with the Evangelical Statement of Faith & Affirmations.
20. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must have a clean driving record.

* No major or minor moving violations in the past three years and no more than 1 at-fault
accident in the past three years.

General Internship Guidelines

  • The internships will be 40 hours a week.
  • The internship concludes in May 2025.
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 28 years old at the acceptance of the internship.
  • College graduate preferred.
  • Interns will have 15 days off their first year 20 days off their second year.
  • Working hours will be set by the supervisor.
  • Interns will be stipend $1150/month.
  • At the completion of the internship in May, interns who complete the entire program will receive an additional $100 for each month they participate.
  • Housing included.
  • Limited meal plan included.
  • Interns will be supervised by the directors in the area which they intern.
  • Composition and documentation of a professional development plan.
  • Most work will be on campus with some local, statewide, and national travel involved.
  • October Attendance at Murdock Trust’s annual Vision and Call internship conference.
  • September and February attendance at the bi-annual CYAK young adult retreat.
  • Weekly meetings and coursework with the project advisor.
  • Must be willing to agree to and sign a statement of Evangelical Covenant Affirmations and Acknowledgement of the Covenant Affirmations and ABHE statement.

WORKING CONDITIONS: These duties will be conducted in an office environment with limited exposure to hazardous materials. The majority of the shift will be spent seated and working on a computer. Must have adequate sight to meet the responsibilities of the job. Must be able to lift 40 pounds on an occasional basis.

DRESS CODE: Within the office, “business casual” dress is expected. Jeans are acceptable as long as they are clean and well-kept. If any questions arise regarding what is appropriate, speak with the supervisor.
