POSITION PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping working the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc. Employee is also responsible for operating a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedules to provide safe and efficient transportation for students. Work involves performing pre-and post-trip inspections of the bus; operating a bus; obeying all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the bus; observing all safety regulations and standards for school buses; and maintaining discipline of students assigned to ride the bus.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians or students and with school personnel.
  • Ability to climb a ladder.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Some experience in custodial work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina and CDL. An employee assigned to this position are governed by Alamance-Burlington School System Policy 7241 Drug and Alcohol Testing of Commercial Motor Vehicle Operators, which spells out drug testing requirements, procedures and consequences of positive alcohol or drug tests or drug tests or arrest for alleged violation of any alcohol or drug-related offense.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes and buffs floor surfaces.
  • Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.
  • Cleans windows, walls, doors, woodwork, supply vents and return vents, blinds and light fixtures.
  • Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture.
  • Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary.
  • Replaces burned-out light bulbs. Replaces ceiling tiles.
  • Change ceiling tiles as necessary while standing on a ladder.
  • Prepares requisition forms to obtain necessary supplies for coming workweek.
  • Sets traps for rodents and other pests, appropriately discarding trapped animals.
  • Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
  • Moves furniture as needed and/or as requested.
  • May open and secure buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off
  • lights at start and end of day, respectively, and monitor heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.
  • May arrange furniture for meetings or other events.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Perform required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and document inspections as required by Transportation Department Operating Instructions for bus drivers.
  • Report mechanical defect(s) or failure(s).
  • Perform required post-trip inspection to detect students who may still be on board the school bus asleep or incapacitated and to detect any other irregularities or vandalism to the bus interior.
  • Operate the assigned school bus on the route(s) and schedule provided by the Bus Driver Manager.
  • Report to the Bus Driver Manager on the day of occurrence, any students added to or deleted from the route by the school principal which will necessitate a change in the route, bus stops and/or schedule.
  • Obey all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus.
  • Observe all safety regulations and standards for school buses including, but not limited to, clearing the school bus and evacuating students quickly in the event of an emergency.
  • Possess a copy of the current Handbook for the School Bus Driver and the Safety Assistant; refer to it periodically for guidance and to answer questions.
  • Maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus, report undisciplined students to the responsible school principal.
  • Transport and discharge students assigned only at the authorized school or bus stop locations.
  • Keep the school bus clean and free of papers, bottles, cans food wrappers and other items which may present a safety issue.
  • Report all accidents as required by Transportation Operating Instructions and remain at the scene of the accident until released by the on-scene transportation supervisor.
  • Complete personal time card and required reports, including reports required in the event of an accident or incident aboard the school bus.
  • Remain in charge of all students aboard the bus at the time of an accident, determining the existence and extent of any injuries, and maintaining the safety of all passengers.
  • Secure the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route; includes parking the vehicle properly, making a visual inspection of the bus to check for damage and the possibility of remaining passengers, (turn off child minder alarm), and secure all windows and doors to protect the interior of the vehicle.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Transportation Director or Assistant Director

Work is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. Significant standing, walking,

moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling.

Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and

outdoor environments, and come into direct contact with ABSS staff, students and the public
