QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess one of the following:
  • Minimum of an Associate’s Degree or
  • 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, or
  • An appropriate score on the ACT WorkKeys Paraprofessional Assessment Tests to meet the required federal standards under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
  • The ability to communicate effectively with students and staff using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of the assigned task.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Background Check Required: (HB 402 ACT 99-361 Alabama Legislature) Upon offer of employment, employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

REPORTS TO: School Principal.

JOB GOAL: To work closely with one or a few handicapped students for more than 50% of the school day in an effort to provide them with the physical help and emotional support they need to gain full benefits from the district’s special education program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Applicable to All Employees:

  • Attend on a regular and predictable basis.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness.
  • Uphold Board policies, including the anti-harassment program.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with students, teachers, staff, supervisors, and the public.
  • Work effectively and efficiently under time and productivity standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with implementation of occupational therapy and/or physical therapy recommendations as appropriate.
  • Assist students with feeding and other associated self-help skills.
  • Assist student with toileting needs (includes changing diapers, transferring student from chair/mat to toilet and back again, student clean-up after toileting, etc.).
  • Assist student with personal hygiene self-help skills (ex: brushing teeth, combing hair, clean up body fluids: nose/mouth, etc.).
  • Assist/support student with mobility around school campus.
  • Assist with transportation of assistive technology devices around school campus.
  • Hears the student(s) in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them but not teaching them.
  • Performs simple errands and tasks for student(s), such as sharpening pencils, carrying lunch trays, and the like.
  • Under supervision of the special education teacher, works with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Accompanies the student(s) to whom assigned when trips to the office or to the school nurse are necessary.
  • Establishes as fully as possible a supportive and sympathetic relationship with the student(s) without fostering or encouraging intense emotional involvement.
  • Serves as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student personnel evaluation team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
  • Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned.
  • Perform any other pertinent assignment to assist in the efficiency and effectiveness of the classroom.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

The environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the job and are not meant to be all inclusive. Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.

Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities. Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment. Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.

WORK SCHEDULE: The work day shall be established by the building principal but shall not exceed 7.5 hours per day, excluding ½ hour for a duty free lunch, unless other arrangements are made by the supervisor.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a nine-month contract (182 days). Salary range is based on the board approved salary schedule.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of Support Personnel.
