POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR ST. CLAIR COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM

TITLE: Principal


JOB GOAL: To serve as the instructional and administrative leader of the school. To work with staff, students, and community to ensure a high-quality educational program. To formulate and accomplish the school and district goals to promote an environment of high expectations for staff and students.

JOB STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

SUPERVISES: All staff and students within assigned school

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Possess a valid administrative certification
  • Minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of leadership experience in administration or equivalent supervisory role
  • Valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate
  • Knowledge of curriculum development, effective classroom practices, and professional development
  • Good public relations skills
  • Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students of the school assigned
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  • Ability to supervise and attend events after school hours
  • Knowledge and ability to use and facilitate the use of various forms of education technology and assist in instructional practices
  • Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills and ability to be an instructional leader across multiple settings. Must work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
  • Ability to visit classrooms, other schools, and athletic venues
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications with the ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system, its vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Provides administrative leadership for all staff and students in assigned school.
  • Conducts staff meetings and trainings to promote efficient functioning of the school, the curriculum, the athletic program, and the behavior program.
  • Demonstrates the ability to multi-task, to delegate appropriately, and to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of effective leadership.
  • Demonstrate and models regular and predictable attendance.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in appearance and in attitude at all times.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required.
  • Collaborate with the Assessment, Accountability, and Counseling Coordinator in following testing guidelines, aligning school ACIP with district goals, providing counseling services to students as needed, and all other items that may fall under the AAC Coordinator’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with the Elementary and/or Secondary C&I Coordinator on matters related to 504, PST, RTI, ARI, curriculum, observations, textbooks, staff interviews, staff evaluations, and all other items that may fall under the E/S C&I Coordinator’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Coordinator on matters related to maintenance, transportation, construction, repairs, athletic field issues, inventorying property, and all other items that may fall under the Operations Coordinator’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with the HR Coordinator on matters related to staff discipline, staff evaluations, personnel paperwork, and all other items that may fall under the HR Coordinator’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with the Federal Programs Coordinator on matters related to Title funds, Title IX, any other federal funded programs, homeless students, ESL/migrant students, and all other items that may fall under the FP Coordinator’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with Student Services Coordinator on matters related to student discipline, Virtual School, student attendance, student home visits, court referrals, hearings, drug testing, calendar, Code of Conduct, bullying/harassment complaints, out-of-zone students, and all other items that may fall under the SS Coordinator’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with Special Education Coordinator on matters related to special education, IEPs, BIPs, FBAs, disciplining students in special education, gifted education, and all other items that may fall under the SE Coordinator’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with CSFO on matters related to finance, payroll, bookkeeping, budgets, purchasing, and all other items that may fall under the CSFO’s supervision.
  • Collaborate with the Technology Director on matters related to technology; including purchasing, implementation, training staff, repairs, and all other items that may fall under the Technology Director’s supervision. Uses appropriate modeling techniques for staff and students.
  • Collaborate with the Child Nutrition Director on matters related to the nutrition program.
  • Oversees the development of newly assigned staff members and assigns Mentors as needed.
  • Communicates, through staff meetings and written/electronic correspondence, information that will keep staff informed of policies, procedures and instructional program changes and updates.
  • Participates in district meetings, state meetings, and other activities that relate to professional development and effective school operations.
  • Oversees school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans.
  • Demonstrates high-expectations for self, for staff, and for students, and creates an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and achievable.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrate appropriate interview procedures.
  • Conduct periodic and consistent observations using state approved evaluation tools.
  • Conduct professional meetings with individual teachers to discuss observations, attendance, and evaluations. Place signed documents in personnel files under the guidance of the HR Coordinator.
  • Supervises and maintains the instructional program according to the school system and state guidelines.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the assigned school.
  • Coordinates school safety plans for assigned school.
  • Meets with various stakeholders to communicate and develop partnerships to benefit the school and community.
  • Supervises transportation on school grounds and transportation safety.
  • Oversees discipline procedures and maintains a safe, orderly learning environment for staff and students.
  • Develops a master schedule and appropriate bell schedule according to the direction of the Superintendent.
  • Approves school sponsored activities and maintains and updated school calendar.
  • Supervises extra-curricular activities.
  • Write and maintain grants related to schools, school system, and/or its programs for the benefit of the students.
  • Communicates with Superintendent, the Superintendent designee, and Coordinators (as appropriate) of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Superintendent.

SALARY:

Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Month

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
