: Certified Scrub/Surgical Technologist
JOB SUMMARY:
The Certified Scrub/Surgical Technician participates in the care of the surgical patient in the Operating Room under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The technician will perform a variety of duties to prepare and maintain the OR Suite for the patient.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) required.
  • Completion of a Surgical Technologist training program required.
  • CPR certification preferred.
  • One year of operating room scrub experience preferred.
  • Experience in orthopedic and outpatient surgery preferred.
  • Must have the knowledge and clinical skills to perform the job duties of a Surgical Technologist.
  • Knowledge of aseptic technique and surgical instrumentation is required.
  • Must have an aptitude for understanding, operating, and troubleshooting machines and equipment.
  • Must understand proper use of high-speed autoclaves and sterilization techniques.
  • Certification of First Assist is required when performing Suture closure.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and appropriately with all physicians and staff.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and a clear understanding of the importance of cost effectiveness in an outpatient surgery center.
  • Must be flexible in job duties and work schedule.
  • Maintain a friendly, positive, and caring attitude with all patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Display professionalism at work and in the community.
  • Physical guidelines include ability to stand/walk for up to eight hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers, assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, push wheelchairs, assist with the moving of patients on and off the operating room table. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
INFECTION CONTROL CATEGORY:
This job is designated as a Category I job, meaning there are tasks that involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material. The use of appropriate protective measures is required for any employee engaged in Category I tasks.
HIPAA RESPONSIBILITIES:
Uses and discloses Protected Health Information (PHI) according to the facility’s policies and procedures.
JOB DUTIES:
  • Prepare for the next day’s cases by gathering supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Wipe flat surfaces the morning of surgery. Assist in cleaning of room and instruments.
  • Perform required autoclave tests and check for proper temperature and pressure. Keep daily logs of autoclave performance.
  • Gather instruments and equipment for procedures.
  • Disinfect and sterilize instruments as required.
  • Assure that equipment is functioning properly.
  • Monitor use of and charge for all supplies used during procedure. Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies used.
  • Prepare OR with supplies and equipment required for the procedure.
  • Assist with transport of the patient to the operating room and positioning of patient for procedure.
  • Monitor for breaks in sterile technique.
  • Perform sponge and needle counts as appropriate.
  • May require non-typical working hours due to emergency situations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of correct emergency procedures, locations of emergency call system and location of emergency supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure that Universal Precautions are maintained.
  • Maintain a clean instrument workroom and sterile supply room.
  • Clean autoclaves per policy.
  • Order supplies for workroom as needed.
  • Update physician preference cards.
  • Inspect instruments for proper working order and notify Supervisor of any required repairs or replacements.
  • Check for outdated supplies.
  • Assist in restocking OR and wrapping and sterilizing of instruments.
  • Assist Physicians with surgical procedures.
  • Attend continuing education offerings to remain current with orthopedic and ASC issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
