ABOUT ALABAMA INSTITUTE FOR DEAF AND BLIND

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

Our services literally span a lifetime including five campuses in Talladega, ten regional centers located in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Shoals, Opelika, and Decatur with programs that range from early and senior intervention, traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state’s largest employer of adults who are blind and deaf.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Center for Assistive Technology Training (CATT) Project is a collaboration between the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) and the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB). Our mission is to provide assistive technology training to teachers of the visually impaired and other educational professionals, utilizing a “train the trainer” model, while also providing training for students and families. Devices are provided through APH and training is provided through AIDB employed trainers serving a nine-state region (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee), Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This role is responsible for providing transportation for CATT personnel as well as administrative and clerical support to team.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with co-workers, consumers, vendors, staff, managers, and individuals with sensory differences
  • Must demonstrate the ability to handle sensitive or restricted information in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Must demonstrate strong computer skills in Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel, and Google platforms (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive).
  • Must demonstrate strong attention to detail, intrinsic motivation, adapt well to change, and a willingness to help and assist where needed.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to think analytically, work independently, meet deadlines, and multi-task.
  • Must possess a valid Alabama Driver License and able to be insured by AIDB insurance carrier.
  • Must have access to a safe and properly insured automobile and able to provide proof of comprehensive automobile insurance for use on the job.
  • Must be able to physically able to stoop, bend, and lift fifty (50) pounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with individuals who are Blind or Visually Impaired.
  • Experience in creating accessible documents.
  • Experience in Braille transcription.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Complete AIDB online training on Deafness, Blindness, Visual Impairments, DeafBlindness and Multiple Disabilities within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be able to travel locally, regionally, and nationally on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to interact with the public in a positive manner via phone, email and electronic communication, and in person.
  • Must transport service animals such as guide dogs, as needed.
  • Provide assistance with paperwork and other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Operate copier, fax machine, and other office equipment.
  • Check the accessibility of documents and make necessary modifications.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including early morning, late afternoons, weekends or overnight trips.
  • Utilize map reading skills and/or the use of the Internet to obtain travel directions and mileage.
  • Process and maintain travel requests by following the procedures for submitting documentation for approval.
  • Assist across Special Projects department, as needed and assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB

SALARY: $15.38 - $17.94 per hour Scale C5 Rank32

260 Days

Direct deposit is required; bi-monthly payroll

This is a non-exempt position and is subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act
