Summary:

This position is responsible for planning, assigning, and supervising activities of the administrative operation. Work includes the responsibility for making decisions regarding actions to be taken, and exercise independent judgment in the application of laws and ordinances. Supervision is exercised through subordinate supervisors over all employees of the assigned operation. Work is performed independently within established laws, policies, and regulations and is reviewed through conferences and reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, assigns, supervises, and participates in the programs and activities of administrative operations including but not limited to the administration of records, training, dispatch, inventory/equipment, patrol, and investigative operations.
  • Assists the Department of Public Safety with investigations as needed.
  • Develops staffing plans, studies crime and other reports to determine trends, and make recommendations for changes in organization and operating procedures to obtain the most effective results.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation and maintenance of necessary records and reports.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Job Requirements:


Minimum Position Requirements (including years of experience, certifications, licenses, etc.):

  • Graduation from a standard high school supplemented by the completion of some college work or Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement, Public Administration, or related area (Criminal Justice, Political Science, Business Admin., Sociology, etc.).
  • Advance education preferred (MS, MPA, FBI National Academy, advanced command training program, etc.).
  • Ten (10) years of experience in law enforcement with at least five (5) years in a supervisory or management position.
  • Certification through Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commissions or currently POSTC certified.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Through knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police administration and police methods
  • Through knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and university regulations
  • Through knowledge of the functions of other governmental authorities as they relate to police work
  • Ability to analyze complex police problems
