We are looking for innovative, progressive individuals to instruct and support students in a center-based, community-oriented after-school program for students ages 5-22 with developmental disabilities. Our sites are located in North Berkeley and Alameda. After the students' school day, they attend our program between 2pm-6pm for activities oriented towards social and recreational development. Full-day sessions are planned during seasonal school breaks that take place from 9am-6pm.
Staff are expected to support and engage with students respectfully, with the goal of reinforcing life skills that enable them to be independent and empowered.
Job Responsibilities:
Staff members will instruct and provide support both on-site and in the community. They will lead activities that support the development of life skills such as cooking, money management, social interaction, self-advocacy, travel training, recreational skills and pre-vocational skills.
This position requires leadership and innovation. Staff are provided with training and a program structure, as well as the opportunity to develop their own activities that serve their students. Since some of our clients are young, the position requires occasional assistance in hygiene, including using the bathroom.
Qualifications:
Be at least 18 years of age
Be able to provide s a Department of Justice and FBI fingerprints clearance, a standard physical, a negative TB test, and documentation of current TDaP and MMR vaccinations or immunity
Be able to become First Aid/CPR certified
Have a minimum of 12 units of related college work directed at social services, child development, or education (Preferred)
Be able to engage and communicate effectively and respectfully with a highly diverse population of students
Be able to create and lead educational and recreational group activities
Be able to work with direct supervision and independently
Be able to adapt and modify curricula and approaches in a fast-paced environment
Be able to read, write and communicate effectively
Compensation:
$19.50/hour upon hire
15-20 hours per week with potential of increased hours during school breaks.
