AKF Engineers is Hiring an Intern/Coop - Mechanical Near Richmond, VA

Position Overview:

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in the field of mechanical engineering while working closely with our engineering team. This internship provides an opportunity to assist in various engineering tasks, from calculations to code compliance evaluations, and contribute to the successful development of projects. You will collaborate with Project Managers and Senior Engineers, receiving technical guidance and mentorship.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • HVAC System Analysis: Support the analysis of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, including load calculations and equipment selection.
  • Ductwork and Piping Layout: Assist in the layout and design of ductwork and piping systems to optimize airflow and fluid distribution.
  • Energy Efficiency Studies: Participate in energy efficiency studies and simulations to enhance the sustainability of mechanical systems.
  • Equipment Specification: Assist in the selection and specification of mechanical equipment such as pumps, chillers, fans, and boilers, considering system performance and energy efficiency.
  • CAD and BIM Support: Collaborate on CAD and BIM (Building Information Modeling) projects, gaining hands-on experience with software tools like AutoCAD and Revit.

General Responsibilities:

  • Task Objectives and Requirements: Review and comprehend task objectives and requirements as communicated by the Project Manager or Project Engineer.
  • Perform Basic Calculations: Engage in fundamental engineering calculations to support project design and evaluation.
  • Code Compliance and Standards: Assist in evaluating engineering guidelines, code compliance requirements, and industry standards.
  • Field Conditions Examination: Participate in the examination of field conditions as necessary to support project development and completion.
  • Documentation: Contribute to documentation processes, including report generation and data analysis.
  • Presentation Support: Prepare materials for presentations and client meetings to effectively communicate project details.
  • Correspondence: Assist in the drafting of correspondence and requests for information.
  • Professional Representation: Represent the company professionally when interacting with clients, architects, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Continuous Learning: Update your knowledge and technical expertise by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and engaging with technical organizations.
  • Adaptability: Perform various duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and willingness to learn.
  • Core Values and Reputation: Understand and demonstrate the firm's core values. Enhance the firm's reputation by taking ownership of client requests and delivering high-quality work.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties as assigned to contribute to the overall success of the firm.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Pursuit: Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree from an accredited Mechanical Engineering Program.
  • Strong Communication: Possess strong verbal, written, analytical, persuasive, and interpersonal skills.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and work effectively as part of a project team.
  • Software Proficiency: Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • CAD/BIM Knowledge: Introductory working knowledge of BIM/Revit and AutoCAD is a plus.
