Sterile Processing Tech
performs all assigned duties related to the reprocessing of medical equipment and instrumentation, including but not limited to the following tasks: receiving, inspecting, cleaning, machine processing, sorting, assembly, packaging and wrapping, sterilization, process controls, storage and distribution.


Job Duties:

  • Perform rounds to hospital soiled utility rooms to collect discontinued patient care moveable equipment and instrumentation and return to the decontamination room for processing.
  • Inspect and initiate proper cleaning techniques for soiled instruments and equipment through the decontamination room.
  • Operates specialty cleaning equipment in the decontamination room, ultrasonic cavitation sinks, machine processors.
  • Sorts, assembles, wraps and packages surgical instrumentation according to set guides and sterile processing techniques.
  • Restocks code carts, specialty carts and restocks sets and trays for use in patient care.
  • Receives deliveries of supplies from Materials Management and puts stock away inside the department in a timely manner, taking all trash outside immediately.
  • As assigned, inventories certain medical/surgical supplies in the operating room suite, returns to Central Service and packages necessary supplies for sterilization. Restocks to the operating room as necessary because par levels fluctuate according to surgery case load.
  • Prepare biological test kits to challenge high and low heat sterilization equipment. Places kits inside autoclaves, retrieves after sterilization cycles and can initiate incubation procedures with accurate documentation.
  • Can monitor sterilizer cycles and detect improper cycle parameters, reporting immediately to senior technician and/or manager
  • Unload sterilizer chambers safely handling packages for restocking.
  • Documents all process controls (biological log books, load record sheets) and as directed, all data necessary for special reports and process improvements.
  • Perform daily high and low dusting to maintain cleanliness of work surfaces.
  • Restocks sets onto shelving in sterile storeroom, rotating supplies and inspecting integrity of every pack, set and container.
  • As directed, assist in reordering supplies, maintaining Set Guide Index, Care & Handling files and vendor information files.

Qualifications:

Job Requirements:

High school diploma at minimum

Specific sterile processing techniques in an acute care hospital preferred.

Certification through IAHCSM, NICHSPDP or Purdue University Continuing Education required.
