Aiken County Public Schools is Hiring a Principal, Elementary Level (2024-2025) Near North Augusta, SC

Position Title: Principal, Elementary

Department: Instructional Services Division

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Schools

FLSA Status: Exempt

SUMMARY:

Provides instructional leadership to staff including the presentation of professional learning activities, observation of classroom instruction, and the provision of feedback regarding teaching performance. Responsible for day-to-day building administration and activities. Responsible for the safety and welfare of both students and staff. Ensures a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere, provides discipline as necessary and enforces school policy. Provides leadership at the local school level in carrying out the goals and objectives of the School District, administers and supervises all the activities and personnel of the school toward the fullest possible development of each student.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interacts with students in a constructive manner to encourage each individual to perform at his/her highest level.
  • Manages all building personnel.
  • Assigns teachers to classrooms and students to classes.
  • Evaluates performance and effectiveness of programs and staff.
  • Coordinates in-service training.
  • Interacts with students in a constructive manner to encourage each individual to perform at optimal levels for staff.
  • Maintains relations with parents, parent groups, school volunteers and outside agencies.
  • Participates in district-wide activities, in-services, and committees, as appropriate.
  • Maintains and implements District, State and Federal policy and procedure changes at the building level. Shares changes with staff.
  • Prepares the school budget and works with comptroller on budgeting/purchasing.
  • Establishes priorities for educational materials to meet the needs of students and teachers.
  • Maintains current information on legal/financial developments of educational legislative reforms.
  • Provides administrative supervision of school-sponsored activities, functions, athletic and special events.
  • Maintains familiarity with needs and policies governing the education of students with special needs.
  • Supervises maintenance, cleanliness, security and safety of the building and grounds.
  • Assumes responsibility for the custody of equipment and facilities and their proper utilization.
  • Maintains inventories as required.
  • Delegates duties and responsibilities to staff in order to effectively carry out school activities.
  • Cooperates with other school principals and officials in student and district inter-school matters.
  • Provides leadership in identifying school needs and implementing educational objectives.
  • Establishes and maintains a continuous program of educational planning and organization.
  • Directs the methods, techniques and procedures, which will effectively insure a quality instructional program.
  • Maintains a continuous evaluation of instructional effectiveness.
  • Maintains a school environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Works closely with other sending and receiving schools to insure a harmonious and cooperative relationship.
  • Supervises or provides appropriate scheduling and placement to accommodate various student abilities and needs.
  • Maintains accurate student records.
  • Provides appropriate experience, consistent with sound educational philosophies, which meet the needs and abilities of the students.
  • Cooperates with area transportation supervisors to provide transportation services to students.
  • Provides the opportunity for students to have advisory input into appropriate areas of school-wide decision-making.
  • Provides for maximum utilization of available facilities.
  • Implements School Board policies, administrative directives, and regulations relating to the school.
  • Maintains student discipline consistent with school district policies.
  • Acts as a communicating liaison between staff and district administrative offices.
  • Prepares or supervises preparation of various reports as required by Academic Level, District, and/or State offices.
  • Assists the Assistant Superintendent and District Superintendent in various duties and tasks as requested or assigned.
  • Manages District budgeted funds and established control over expenditures and receipts of local monies.
  • Provides assistance to teachers and staff in order to improve the quality of educational services.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Master’s Degree; minimum of five years of experience in teaching and administration; or equivalent combination of education/experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid South Carolina Certificate in one of the following areas:

  • Elementary Principal (Tier I, Tier II)
  • Elementary Supervisor

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages and supervises certified and classified employees in the elementary school. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of staff. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, instructional manuals, financial reports or governmental regulations. Ability to design and write professional development programs, reports, business correspondences, procedural manuals and data entry procedures. Ability to effectively present professional development and training and respond to questions from groups of trainees and administrators. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, employees and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and in the display and interpretation of assessment data. Ability to apply basic concepts of statistical analysis, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply state and federal regulations to related academic initiatives. Ability to effectively apply knowledge of academic initiatives, programs, and services. Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. The position requires meeting deadlines, and interacting with teachers and administrators. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee.

Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to work independently, with limited supervision. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to implement a flexible work schedule to meet the reporting deadlines. Ability to perform duties with a high level of detail and accuracy. Ability to self-monitor and manage multiple tasks while working individually and with members of a group. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the school community.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours. Duties of the job require frequent use of a computer monitor and related equipment.

Elementary Principal Pay Scale


The terms of employment detailed in this job description are based on full time employment during the school year. Conditions of employment adjusted for part time employees or individuals who are hired for less than an entire school year.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job evaluated annually according to Board Policy.
