Reports to: Director of Prevention

Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma (or equivalent) plus one-year data entry/billing experience; Excellent written and oral communication and reporting skills; Proven leadership skills and the ability to work as a team member as well as independently; Communication effectively with the target populations from diverse cultural backgrounds; Ability to interact with individuals and organizations; Proficient with Microsoft Office and database management; Ability to mentor individuals in these areas; Reliable transportation, valid AL driver’s license, good driving record, acceptable auto insurance limits, and proof of COVID-19 vaccination(s); Must complete pre-employment process.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of HIV prevention education and/or public health, office administration, and working with diverse populations; Bachelors degree; a person living with HIV/AIDS and knowledge of the LGBTQ community in greater Birmingham.

Overall Mission: The Peer Mentor will provide creative group and individual settings to conduct interventions targeting youth/young adults high-risk or living with HIV/AIDS, ages 13-34.

About the Position:

The Peer Mentor will provide individual and group-level interventions targeting high-risk individuals and persons living with HIV/AIDS, ages 13-34. The Peer Mentor will be tasked with facilitating support groups, workshops and community discussions at the community center. As primary facilitator of group-level interventions, the Peer Mentor will utilize various training platforms, presentations, group activities, handout materials and social media to engage and recruit participants. Interventions will occur in the Greater Birmingham area. Provide peer support and mentorship to individuals experiencing mental health challenges

Responsibilities Include

1. Be available to work during non-traditional work hours including nights and weekends.

2. Work with UAB Family Clinic staff to increase therapy adherence and care retention.

3. Building rapport with key populations (with a focus on LGBTQ communities) to encourage utilization of HIV/AIDS primary and secondary education and HIV testing through AIDS Alabama.

4. Facilitate and lead prescribed interventions and referral services.

5. Set up peer-led group meetings for young people to identify and discuss factors decreasing risks of nonadherence and its consequences, along with other intersecting issues affecting their decision-making.

6. Develop, implement and measure a recruitment strategy to promote health interventions in the community.

7. Collect and report data monthly; provide quarterly reporting and meet with funded partners.

8. Maintain inventory of educational pamphlets, brochures, condoms and other supplies required for implementation of programs.

9. Plan calendar for interventions and community programs.

10. Understand and maintain appropriate boundaries with clients and colleagues.

11. Attend agency and Educational departmental trainings, workshops, conferences, and staff meetings.

12. Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

1. Schedule: Work hours are full time, and occasionally include nights and/or weekends; varies based on the needs of the consumers, the consumer’s family, and the agency.

2. Physical: May lift up to 50lb; long periods of standing, stooping, bending, and sitting. Employee must be able to climb stairs, able to read documents and respond to written communication, and able to hear and understand the English language.

3. Cultural: Must be comfortable working with all people regardless of age, gender, race, religious background, sexual orientation, gender identity, health status, and those with impaired cognitive behaviors.

Overall Expectations

The employee will be expected to represent the agency in person and through all other methods of communication cation in a way that reflects the agency’s mission. Staff are expected to adhere to all AIDS Alabama Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines (including, but not limited to, Human Resources, Finance, Operational, and Housing) as presented and as adapted. The employee will establish a strong, solid line of communication with all levels of staff and external business partners. All employees are expected to perform and communicate openly, effectively, and professionally with staff members, consumers, community members, and external business partners. Candidates must be willing and able to complete all training in obligatory timeframes. Staff participation in agency activities, testing events, and fundraisers is expected as necessary and requested. Be aware that any breach of confidentiality is grounds for dismissal. Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $33,000.00 - $37,000.00 per year
