Job Title: AW609 Flight Control Systems Engineer III

Department: Engineering

Reports to: Manager Flight Control System US Products

Location(s): AWPC Philadelphia, PA, with occasional domestic and international travel up to 20%

  1. Summary of Position: (Brief description of overall responsibilities and function)
  • Collaborate with the cross-geography team members in the definition, planning, and schedule of the AW609 Flight Control System activities.
  • Support a cross geographic AW609 FCS team in development of aircraft systems that satisfy company, regulatory, and customer requirements, through the implementation of fundamental Systems Engineering principals. Team activities include system, interface, hardware and software design/requirements/test activities. Verification and validation and audit activities with certification authorities. 
  • Support the development and execution of Systems Engineering plans to ensure an integrated and life cycle set of system product and process solutions to satisfy the program requirements.
  • Support the technical lead with the certification authorities for the AW609 Flight Control System. Support formal audits, including S/W SOI and System Reviews.
  • Support the maintenance of the AW609 FCS Certification Plan and the management of the certification requirements to the Flight Control System.
  • Work with company procurement team to manage and coordinate vendor activities.
  • Support Flight and Lab Testing activities.
  • This position must work with technical lead, technical Fellow, Project Specialists, and Department Heads to support the development of design criteria and methodologies.

Coordinate and work with the FCS team to support activities for the AW609 development and certification efforts. Set priorities, track team progress, identify and mitigate risks.

Communicate and coordinate with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the execution plan is feasible and will support program milestones. Develop and monitor metrics and report status to leadership.

Track open issues and work with the technical team to address them. Support with the negotiation with the certification authorities to find a timely and economical path to certification.

Participate in design activities to support the AW609.

Support and coordinate with supply chain management/procurement on vendor activities and deliverables.

Continually look to improve tools and processes to increase quality and productivity.

  1. Qualifications for Position:

A. Education

Eng degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering

B. Experience

  1. Five years of experience with fly by wire flight control system design, test, analysis, integration, algorithm development, and components integration.
  2. Five years of experience participating in commercial aircraft certification programs.
  3. Desired/preferred experience or working knowledge with the following;
    • FAA airworthiness regulations Part 25, 29 and EASA CRI and AMCs
    • FAA Issue Papers process and FAA compliance and approval processes
    • DO-178B/C, DO-254, DO-160G, standards 
    • Avionics bus standards ARINC-429, MIL-STD-1553 and CANbus
    • VHDL coding and complex HW FPGA 
    • SAE Processes ARP4754/A and ARP4761
    • Experimental flight testing and real time telemetry tools (e.g. IADS) 
    • Hardware-in-the-loop simulation
    • Hands-on development and troubleshooting of electronic flight control systems installed on flying prototype aircraft
    • Practical use of EVMS tools and techniques
    • Project management methodologies (PMBOK)
    • DOORS, MATLAB and SIMULINK, Python, C, C
    • Model-Based System Engineering tools and techniques
    • Agile development and project management

  • Strong knowledge of flight control system requirements and design, redundancy management, failure identification and passivation methods, failure impact assessment, flight control systems simulation & modeling, numerical methods and statistical estimation, digital systems, guidance and navigation principals.
  • Knowledge of the integration aspects of the Flight Control System within the Avionics and with the Powerplant, Hydraulics, Structures.
