Agricultural Labor Relations Board is Hiring an ATTORNEY Near Monterey, CA

Under the general supervision of the General Counsel and direct supervision of the Regional Director, the incumbent acts as the investigating and prosecuting attorney in the legal matters involving complex, difficult, and sensitive unfair labor practices of the Agricultural Labor Relations Act.

Department Information

The ALRB exercises jurisdiction over approximately 800,000 farmworkers and employers, providing collective bargaining rights to farmworkers that were specifically exempted from the coverageof the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) in 1935. The California Agricultural Labor Relations Board was created in 1975 to ensure peace in the fields of California by guaranteeing justice for all agricultural workers and stability in agricultural labor relations. Headquartered in downtown Sacramento with regional offices throughout the state, ALRB employees are committed to, and guided by, the principles of the Agricultural Labor Relations Act, to “encourage and protect the rights of agricultural employees to full freedom of association, self-organization ... and to be free from interference, restraint, or coercion” (Labor Code § 1140.2).

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Understanding of and/or experience with issues impacting low-wage immigrant workers such as farmworkers, and the agricultural community
  • Legal research, writing, analysis and advocacy skills
  • Labor law experience
  • Familiarity with the Agricultural Labor Relations Act
  • Hearing and/or trial experience
  • Litigation experience
  • Experience working with outside counsel
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence, administrative hearings and state and federal civil procedure
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with government policies and procedures
