PURPOSE:
The Service Deli and Bakery Manager leads our team with excellence. Responsibilities include supervising staff, ensuring exceptional customer service, managing inventory, and maintaining food safety standards. Drive sales and profitability through effective merchandising and cost control. Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills required. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential duties of the Service Deli and Bakery Manager consist of, but are not limited to, the following responsibilities:
  • THE CUSTOMER IS THE FIRST PRIORITY; the entire store is in the forefront of that activity; and every member of the store's team is here to fully support that priority with prompt and friendly service.
  • Prioritize and strive to serve our customers, guiding the service deli and bakery clerks to provide prompt and friendly assistance.
  • Maintain staffing levels to ensure adequate coverage in the deli area and the bakery, following the assigned work schedule per the Store Director.
  • Enforce company policies and grooming standards among clerks.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, health codes, and food safety standards are upheld and maintained by all.
  • Train and support clerks in their duties, including food preparation and customer interaction.
  • Monitor sanitation and safety standards in the service deli area and bakery area, maintaining cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Oversee food preparation to minimize wastage and ensure adherence to recipe guidelines.
  • Assist in inventory management, including rotation of products and controlling costs.
  • Provide guidance on operating equipment and handling special orders efficiently.
  • Assist in receiving and maintaining inventory control, checking product quality and condition.
  • Coordinate daily tasks among clerks to optimize productivity and resolve operational issues.
  • Uphold quality control standards, ensuring consistency in product quality and presentation.
  • Oversee cash register procedures and handle any discrepancies promptly in the service deli area.
  • Ensure proper storage of products, including refrigerated or freezer items.
  • Keep clerks engaged during slower periods by assigning tasks and responsibilities.
  • Implement mark-downs for stale dated products as needed.
  • Enforce safety policies and promote conservation practices.
  • Order department products weekly to maintain adequate stock levels and variety in the deli and bakery departments, ensuring availability of popular items and seasonal specialties.
  • Monitor product inventory and sales trends to adjust ordering quantities and optimize stock levels, minimizing out-of-stock situations and excess inventory.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and vendors to negotiate pricing, discounts, and promotional deals, maximizing profitability while maintaining quality standards.
  • Conduct regular inventory audits to identify slow-moving or obsolete items, implementing strategies to reduce waste and improve inventory turnover.
  • Analyze sales data and customer feedback to identify trends and preferences, adjusting product offerings and promotions accordingly to meet customer demand.
  • Work closely with the store management to develop and implement merchandising plans and promotional campaigns, enhancing product visibility and driving sales.
  • Train clerks on proper product handling and storage procedures to ensure freshness and quality, minimizing spoilage and maximizing shelf life.
  • Monitor product presentation and display techniques, ensuring visually appealing and enticing displays that showcase the quality and variety of products available.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, new product developments, and competitor offerings, incorporating relevant insights into product selection and merchandising strategies.
  • Collaborate with the POS department to develop marketing materials and promotions to promote deli and bakery products, driving customer engagement and sales growth.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Store Director and/or Assistant Store Director.
PHYSICAL AND GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must possess good communication and writing skills.
  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend instructions and information.
  • Must have basic math and accounting skills to do food costing and percentages.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language effectively in order to read and understand: Instructions for operating ovens, fryers, fire suppression system and other mechanical and electronic equipment; Company handbooks, policies and procedures, and other written job-related documents including safety notices and other postings on company bulletin boards.
  • Ability to fill out forms and compose and write reports.
  • This position requires an individual capable of sitting, standing for extensive period, walking, bending, climbing stairs, and carrying loads up to 50 pounds. Must be able to speak and communicate clearly. This position might require early morning, late nights and working holidays and weekends.
  • Must understand and be able to perform basic mathematics and accounting functions related to food costing and inventory. Must be able to read, write, understand, and prepare reports as required. Understand and interpret instructions and information.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment will be completed in a service deli and bakery environment, in a hot environment; it may include occasional exposure to refrigerated frozen food storage areas. The work environment includes frequent exposure to heated ovens and high temperatures; however, duration of exposure is generally brief or transient and is task related. The atmospheric environment may occasionally contain airborne particles of flour, spice, and other finely powdered substances and frequent aromatic odors.
SAFETY-SENSITIVE POSITION:
Job responsibilities include tasks or duties that could affect the safety or health of the public as tasks include working with un-packaged foods, potentially hazardous food or food-contact surfaces. Must hold and obtain a valid food worker card and a ServSafe Manager Certification issued by the State of Alaska's Division of Environmental Health (DEC) or be able to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
