Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Small Farms BES Intern for the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) at Oregon State University (OSU).
Position are located at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC), Oregon State University in Aurora, Oregon. The Small Farms program is recruiting one student who will assist the Metro-area program's Climate Adaptive Demonstrations at the NWREC Learning Farm.
Position Duties 100% of Duties include
70% Field work and data collection: Assisting with field preparations, such as; planting, spreading amendments, transplanting and direct seeding in field, irrigation setup (including drip), water monitoring and weeding with hand tools and helping setup the cultivating tractor, harvesting and post harvest crop cleanup.
Assist with field data collection, photos, written observations, and social media and project website updates of plots throughout the season.
30% Workshop and field day support: Assist in planning three Extension events for the Climate Adaptive Series. Tasks will include outreach, creating and installing signs, registration support, tent and table set-up and take down, assisting in preparation for flavor evaluations, creating and entering evaluation data, presenting findings, and writing an Extension article about the dry farmed and reduced irrigation melon trials.

- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the
Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications Must have been awarded the 2024 -2025 BES Experiential Learning Internship.

Capable of working outside and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Student employees may need to drive to offsite research locations, as needed at the request of the Metro Small Farms Program.
Drivers must be over 18 years old and have successfully completed OSU's required motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000et seq.12
Preferred (Special) Qualifications Competence in Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Competence in creating engaging posts for social media
Two years of college-level courses in Horticulture/Crop Science/Agronomy/Soil Science/Botany or other Biology/Natural Resources discipline.
The student should have some experience in farm
Working Conditions / Work Schedule - Work is mainly performed outdoors at the research farm and office settings.
- The ability to work in and dress appropriately for all weather conditions is required.
- Duties may include lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lb); standing, squatting, or kneeling for long periods of time; walking over plowed fields or uneven surfaces; and other strenuous activities such as hoeing weeds, moving irrigation pipe, harvesting, operating push mowers, string trimmers, assisting with hooking up tractor implements.
