Description of Job

Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is a cash funded, self supporting division of the Colorado Department of Corrections. CCi provides training and education for inmates. CCi provides services to many government and non profit organizations with an emphasis on excellent customer service.
This position is a Farm Supervisor, Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I). This position ensures the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates. This position prepares inmates for community re-entry by promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision and Values while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.
Safety and Security - This position maintains safety and security of facility; through clear and accurate communication. The position trains and guides staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting searches; monitors workplace environment and offender behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to facility policy and limits offender access to restricted areas; position performs offender counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to agency policy and writes and submits required reporting.
Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, position promotes a safe and secure environment.
Inmate Accountability - The position ensures offender workers are trained in work area and ensures timely completion of tasks. Ensures offender evaluations are completed, tracks and calculates offender hours and pay, creates schedule and assigns tasks and resolves informal grievances according to agency policy; reduces offender idleness and creates real life work opportunities to prepare inmates for community re-entry. Position holds inmates accountable for attendance and utilizes PCDCIS Chronological Entry to report/track both positive and negative behavior.
Operations - This position ensures the safe, secure, efficient, compliant and cost effective execution of assigned tasks and projects by performing "hands on" instructional work alongside staff and offender crew.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Provides supervision, instruction, oversight, mentorship, and training of inmates in farming operations;
  • Instructs inmates in proper methods of land tillage and preparation for planting, crop planting, irrigation, cultivation, and harvesting of all crops;
  • Trains inmates on proper methods of harvest hay and corn crops, vegetable crops, washing, sorting, and packing;
  • Coordinates and oversees products and production practices to ensure health and safety standards are met;
  • Directs daily activities, promoting positive performance and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards;
  • Contributes to profitability and meets established quality standards;
  • Performs hands-on instructional work and equipment maintenance;
  • Motivates, reviews, and evaluates offender performance;
  • Completes and creates documents and reports by gathering information and inputting information into electronic systems;
  • Ensures the safety and security of the public, facility staff, and inmates by evaluating work conditions and instructs staff and inmates in proper safety methods;
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications:
Four (4) years of work experience in the farming industry with irrigation, row crop growing, planting functions and operating/maintenance of farming equipment. Experience must be described in detail on your application to receive credit. Any work experience less than full time will be prorated.
OR:

A minimum of two (2) years of experience, as described above may be combined with experience in a correctional environment for a total of at least four (4) years.
Correctional Experience - must be security related duties where primary responsibilities included detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates in a prison facility; conducting counts and searches while monitoring inmate assignments and movement throughout the day.
Substitutions:
  • College or university course work in Agricultural Management, Farm & Ranch Management or a closely related field will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. You must attach a copy of your transcripts that contain your name, name of the college, type of degree received and date degree was awarded.
Required Competencies:
  • Must be proficient in farming, irrigation and plant functions;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of farm equipment;
  • Ability to motivate others to work cohesively in accomplishing tasks;
  • Ability to maintain industrial tools and equipment;
  • Ability to effectively work with inmates through daily instruction in a variety of situations;
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations (such as fights, fires, and escapes);
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Exceptional discernment and decision making skills;
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language;
  • Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in the Colorado State Correctional environment in the Farming Industry;
  • Experience in training and supervising individuals in a farming environment;
  • Possess a CDL.

  • Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;
    • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
    • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
    • Swing a baton in a striking technique;
    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
    • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire;
