Roots for Peace (RFP) organizes immigrant Latinx youth to address health and economic inequities in Los Angeles. Through community organizing and coalition building, RFP supports youth to create structural change necessary to invest in systems of community care, with leadership development, and an intersectional, anti-oppression framework at the center.

SUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Padosi Fellow will work closely with the Roots for Peace team and Program Director to help execute our 2023-2024 Youth Programming. Programming includes supporting
the execution of a Summer Freedom School and helping develop and execute a strong youth-led Organizing Program that supports youth to gain organizing skills towards building power and win changes that impact their lives and that of their communities in South Central and the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Supporting with the implementation of the Organizing Program will include engaging with coalition building efforts, helping plan and facilitate Leadership Development workshops, supporting with any logistics related to the Organizing Program or coalition/campaign work or general events.

ESSENTIAL DIRECTOR FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The key responsibilities of the Padosi Fellow include assisting the Program Director, and leading when possible, with the following:

YOUTH ORGANIZING:
1. Assist in logistics and facilitation of youth leadership/organizing programming, including summer Freedom School, that centers youth empowerment.
2. Assist in the development of curriculum using community organizing and an anti-oppression framework.
3. In collaboration with Roots for Peace team, organize and mentor youth, primarily Latinx youth, at the local level to engage in new and existing organizing campaigns to change public policy.
4. Support and expand the base of young people engaged with Roots for Peace in South Central Los Angeles and across the city.
5. Support youth to engage in organizing activities across the city and county
6. Grow partnerships with community-based organizations to deepen youth community engagement and power.
7. Support in communication efforts with campaign and coalition partners.
8. Work with the Healing Justice and/or Economic Justice Thematic Networks as part of AFSC-related collaborative projects and campaigns, as necessary.
9. Support any additional Roots For Peace Programmatic needs, including but not limited to: support youth engagement at the South LA Community Farm, engage alumni and volunteers in action/volunteer opportunities, support Root’s For Peace’s online presence, through social media.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree preferred and/or training in a related area.

EXPERIENCE:
1. Experience facilitating youth-led organizing/advocacy and leadership development efforts in the areas of economic, racial, and social justice.
2. Demonstrated experience in building partnerships and working collaboratively with schools, after school programs, parents, community groups, non-profit organizations and/or decision-makers.
3. Able to work with a team and on independent projects.
4. Experience in or willingness to learn to prioritize work, to plan and implement tasks with minimum supervision, and to respond quickly and effectively to unplanned activities, while also meeting deadlines.
5. Knowledge and experience with issues affecting diverse communities in Los Angeles.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
7. Proficient in Microsoft Office and various social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
8. Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends.

3. Ability to drive and has reliable means of transportation - extremely encouraged
4. Ability to connect with diverse audiences and to influence situations using tact and diplomacy.
5. Willingness to work with a committee-led process using consensus decision-making.
6. Ability to work well under pressure and adapt easily to changing situations and priorities.
7. Ability to commute to site location and Los Angeles office.
8. Initiative, creativity, drive, energy and a sense of humor.

COMPENSATION: Salary Range: $43,680 per year (equivalent to $24/hour), 35 hours per week– Non-Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
