Summary of Principal Responsibilities

The Global Policy Coordinator for Economic and Climate Justice provides leadership for AFSC’s global efforts to bring about policy changes articulated in AFSC’s 2020-2030 Strategic Plan, working in consortium with AFSC’s relevant policy and program staff organization-wide to craft and carry out advocacy initiatives informed by AFSC’s program experience and connection to impacted communities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Engage in analysis and discernment to shape AFSC’s policy positions and strategies on issues of economic justice and climate justice globally, providing expertise internally and externally with policymakers, media sources, and key institutions;
  2. Facilitate organization-wide policy change strategies to address AFSC’s policy change goals in the areas of Economic and Climate Justice with governments, multilateral organizations, regional consortia, and influential actors globally, with a focus on U.S. government;
  3. Maintain a comprehensive overview of political developments and contextual realities on issues related to AFSC’s programs in these thematic areas globally, analyzing information from internal and external sources to inform the development and adjustment of integrated policy impact strategies;
  4. Provide leadership and support for the development of advocacy materials and publications, including research and writing for position papers, op eds, talking points, action alerts, newsletters, and web content to reflect AFSC’s voice and nuanced analysis;
  5. Collaborate with AFSC program and policy staff to advance specific policy goals and actively seek opportunities to collaborate with organizations, professional groups, institutions, etc. that will expand the reach and maximize the effectiveness of the AFSC;
  6. Coordinate direct advocacy and education efforts with government officials and key institutions to communicate AFSC’s experience-based perspectives and recommendations;
  7. Facilitate events and public engagement including briefings, public actions, press outreach, and other events on key areas of concern to AFSC;
  8. Serve as a key member of the organization’s policy strategy and advocacy team, providing representation within the Economic Justice Hub and leadership for the organization’s efforts to forge a path forward to meet its crosscutting commitment to address climate justice.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in public policy or a related field required; Master’s degree a plus.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of four years of professional experience working in public policy advocacy in areas of economic justice and/or climate justice.

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  2. Close familiarity with US Government institutions as well as a range of global policymaking institutions and processes and experience in developing effective strategies to impact public policy at multiple levels.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff across a range of global contexts.
  4. Demonstrated experience working in direct advocacy contexts on issues of concern to the AFSC, including a proven ability to reach out collaboratively to individuals, groups and organizations.
  5. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including proficiency in distilling complex information into digestible forms for diverse audiences.
  6. Demonstrated experience with research, analysis, and development of positions on complex policy issues.
  7. Aptitude for critical listening, observation, and information-gathering from a range of sources.
  8. Ability to successfully juggle multiple advocacy issues and competing demands in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
  9. Ease in navigating all standard computer applications and facility employing web-based communications, advocacy and research tools and methods.
  10. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  11. Flexibility to attend evening and weekend meetings and accommodate occasional travel, both within the U.S. and internationally as needed.
  12. Fluency in an additional language beyond English preferred.
  13. Experience living in the global south preferred.
  14. Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities.

COMPENSATION: Salary Family - Policy Coordinator I ($70,000 - $90,000) - Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
