Phlebotomist - Phlebotomists are medical professionals who work in the clinic’s medium complexity lab and obtains blood samples from patients, then prepares specimens for analysis and performs various screening tests.They are responsible for efficiently and accurately performing blood draws and preparing them for testing.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or GED, required
  • Graduates of a Phlebotomy program or equivalent vocational-technical school, required
  • Professional certification in phlebotomy, preferred
  • Experience in a medical office setting, 1 years preferred. Urgent care is a plus.

Pay and Benefits:

  • $18-20 per hour, depending on years of experience as a Phlebotomist
  • Performance-driven bonuses paid monthly

What We Need: We are currently seeking energetic, driven, and team-oriented Phlebotomists who have good communication skills, attention to detail, and who focus on high-quality patient care. The Phlebotomist will work closely with Medical assistants and are a part of a team to provide successful health outcomes and efficient clinic workflows. At AFC, the patient is at the center of everything we do. Therefore, it is essential that the AFC Phlebotomist understands and agrees to provide the highest standards of care and conduct to our AFC patients. A sense of urgency while maintaining calm and collection is an important attribute.
Please note, the items listed below are not all-inclusive of the standards expected of AFC.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities: The duties will be performed in accordance with policy and procedure, the standard of care, and in accordance with state certification. The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Be a team player and be willing to enhance the team output by providing clinical support duties and expertise as a Phlebotomist. This is a critical attitudinal and behavioral component that is foundational to all the rest of the responsibilities below.
  • Provide patients, employers, and other customers excellent customer service.
  • Prepares patients before drawing blood, determining the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health, etc.
  • Explains blood draw procedures to patients and answers any questions about the process.
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
  • Performs, collects, and labels CLIA-waved lab tests and reports results.
  • Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
  • Performs both DOT and non-DOT urine drug and alcohol tests.
  • Follows all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain a sanitary work area
  • Verifies patient information and labeling samples properly.
  • Accurately updates patient information in EMR
  • Follows HIPAA; protecting patient privacy rights by maintaining the confidentiality of personal and financial information
  • Helps nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
  • Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders, and escalates as necessary to Lab Training Manager. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.
  • Contributes to the general laboratory functions and facility needs.
  • Attends regular department staff meetings and offsite training as requested by Clinic Manager and approved by Operations.
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule, recording results in the quality-control log, and identifying and reporting needed changes.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.
  • Clean and sterilize both instruments and equipment after use.
  • Perform other job-related duties as directed by manager

Job Scope: Job operates within established parameters and influences development and/or decisions regarding new policy or guidelines. Position is responsible for ensuring optimal quantity and quality of samples. Additional responsibilities include call processing for the clinic and associated staff accountability at the clinic. Job has decision making authority within scope of responsibility and requires innovation/tenacity to improve internal processes. Consequences of errors result in suboptimal patient care and poor clinic workflow
