Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a talented mid-level Geologist for immediate employment in the Sacramento area. Working at AECOM means being part of a global team, collaborating with award-winning professionals across the world. The successful candidate will research and solve technical problems in accordance with accepted practice and methodology. The individual will report to and be guided by one or more project managers and senior technical staff in the execution of field work at projects sites, and assist with gathering and analyzing geological, hydrogeological, and geochemical data in both the field and office settings. The candidate must possess their own personal vehicle for travel to and from job offices.

As an intermediate-level professional, the individual will work on both field and office tasks. In the field, the individual will use established technical approaches and methods to collect data. In the office, the individual will work independently to evaluate the data and present the results for less complex projects, and support more senior staff in the technical analysis and reporting for projects of greater complexity. With greater experience, the individual will analyze issues and develop solutions to technical problems. The individual will gain knowledge from direct experience and working with more senior staff and gain increasing responsibility to apply their technical knowledge and experience to implement strategies and support design and delivery of products to meet customer and business needs.

The responsibilities of this role include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Conduct surface and subsurface investigations that employ soil borings; test pits; well installations; soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling; aquifer testing; and borehole and surface geophysical surveys.

  • Examine and describe soil samples and interpret geologic and hydrogeologic conditions.

  • Interpret and record data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Perform subsurface drilling investigations to determine the presence and extent of contamination in soil and groundwater, and vapor in soil pore-space matrices.

  • Be proactive in recognizing and appropriately addressing health and safety issues for the entire team.

  • Assist with preparation of proposals for small and moderate scope projects.

  • Work independently with a minimal to moderate level of guidance and work effectively as a team member.

  • Assist project managers with budget and scope preparation, development of work plans, and overall coordination of a variety of project management tasks related to new and on-going projects.

  • Assist more junior staff members with aspects of their job or grow to coordinate activities of a small team.

  • Drive quality control for assigned tasks or segments of a project.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in geology or relevant geological science discipline (e.g., geophysics, hydrogeology, or geochemistry)

  • 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Due to the nature of the work, U.S. citizenship is required

  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of environmental remediation and investigation experience

  • Master of Science degree in geology or relevant geological science discipline (e.g., geophysics, hydrogeology, or geochemistry).

  • Demonstrated experience with site characterization, subsurface investigation, and remediation projects at various client sites.

  • Demonstrated experience applying geological knowledge to monitoring and subsurface investigations in field and office settings.

  • Possess technical report writing skills and prepare monitoring and investigation reports.

  • Ability to independently perform fieldwork and provide leadership of field teams.

  • Experience conducting fieldwork such as: drilling, characterization, and sampling; monitoring well (groundwater and soil vapor) installation and test pit excavation; soil, sediment, soil vapor, surface water, and groundwater sampling; surface and borehole geophysical techniques; aquifer testing; and remedial systems performance monitoring.

  • Experience preparing plans, permits applications, and reports for hazardous waste, air quality, storm water, and wastewater programs.

  • Ability to clearly communicate with subcontractors, regulatory agents, and clients during field activities.

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 40‒60% to various job sites within the US (primary area of travel is Northern California and nearby regions).

  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certificate and annual refresher certificate.

  • 10-hour and/or 30-hour OSHA Construction Training course certificate.

  • First aid/CPR certificate.

Additional Information

Compensation:

Offered rate of compensation in San Francisco, CA will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The salary range for this position is $63,000. - $90,000.
