Position : Supervising Clinical Laboratory Assistant - Full-time - Clinical Lab - Shift
Compensation
The estimated pay for this position is $23.1294 to 28.4462. The rates shown include a 6% premium pay (base= $-$ plus 6%). This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses. In addition, this position may be eligible for participation and company contributions into the Deferred Compensation Plan.
Definition :
Under general direction of the Supervising Clinical Laboratory Technologist, to plan, schedule and supervise the work of Clinical Laboratory Assistants; to operate automated laboratory equipment; and to do related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics :
This is a single position classification for a working supervisor who possesses the ability to perform the tasks of a Clinical Laboratory Assistant as well as train, supervise and coordinate the work of Clinical Laboratory Assistants.
Essential Functions :
  • Interviews and recommends qualified candidates for employment as Clinical Laboratory Assistants;
  • Conducts training of new Clinical Laboratory Assistants;
  • Assists in the training of phlebotomist students;
  • Schedules and assigns the work of Clinical Laboratory Assistants;
  • Counsels and evaluates work of Clinical Laboratory Assistants;
  • Assists professional staff in performing portions of various biological and chemical procedures of a technical nature;
  • Assists in operation of complex electronic equipment such as multiple analyzers, cell counting equipment, and other instruments used in technical laboratory work;
  • Transcribes results that have previously been recorded;
  • Uses automatic syringes, proportioners and diluters; performs minor equipment repairs when necessary;
  • Processes serum from whole blood; draws blood from patients and centrifuges blood specimens for referral to Clinical Laboratory Technologists;
  • Prepares samples for chemical analysis;
  • Concentrates specimens and may make primary inoculations of the test material to be cultured onto appropriate media;
  • Prepares and stains slide preparations for microscopic examination;
  • Keeps records and maintains supplies;
  • Resolves problems with doctors, nurses and/or patients; writes incident reports; assists in development of policies and procedures;
  • Assists with implementation of laboratory procedures;
  • Dependent upon area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in the care of the newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient ranging up to 100 years of age.
Other Functions:
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.
Employment Standards :
Completion of twelfth grade and three (3) years experience performing laboratory work at a level comparable to Clinical Laboratory Assistant II. At least one (1) year of experience drawing blood, and one year of experience in an acute care setting must be included in the above three years experience.
AND
Possession and maintenance of a current State of California Department of Health Services issued Phlebotomy Technician I or II certificate. (Chapter 3, Division 2 of the Business and Profession's Code and Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations).
OR
Possession of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist Certificate.
Appointees not possessing the American Heart Association Responder or Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire must successfully complete appropriate training and qualify for the RQI Responder certification within 60 days of employment. As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Responder certification and competency.
Knowledge of :
Laboratory methods and procedures, fundamentals of physical and life sciences; the principles of supervision, interviewing and scheduling of employees; the use and care of laboratory equipment
Ability to:
Work cooperatively with professional persons.
