Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Charge Nurse, Med Surg Nights in this position, will be a licensed professional Registered Nurse (RN), conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment. This position assists in coaching and mentoring department staff in areas of clinical and professional practice. This position provides nursing care to a diverse patient population assuming leadership responsibilities with high level contributions at the bedside, unit, and service lines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to, leading the unit and shared governance activities, assessing unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities, serving as a clinical resource, coaching and mentoring department staff in areas of clinical and professional practice.
  • Works collaboratively with ancillary staff and other patient care personnel in maintaining standards of professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.
  • Coordinates nursing care on the unit through staff assignments, assisting/rounding with physicians, coordinating patient orders, communicating with ancillary departments and assisting staff during the shift.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities to improve patient safety and quality of care. Maintains cultural and diversity awareness when dealing with patients, visitors, co-workers and other customers.
  • Admits, transfers, and discharges patients.
  • Completes ongoing patient assessment and documents according to policy.
  • Completes nursing assessment within department standard time of admission or designates reason for incompleteness. Reviews database and nutrition screen.
  • Participates in the development of patient plan of care to include patient problems, goals, evaluation and interventions.
  • Reports symptoms and significant changes in patient’s condition to appropriate personnel.
  • Assesses, collaborates and coordinates patient’s discharge planning needs and readiness for discharge with other members of the care team.
  • Demonstrates appropriate application of age specific standards, policies and procedures and guidelines in caring for child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Follows age specific standards in administering medications based on the patient’s age.
  • Follows age specific standards of care during altered states of consciousness related to analgesia, conscious sedation or anesthesia.
  • Uses age specific standards, policies and procedures, and guidelines to perform treatments and procedures that are routine for unit/clinic based on patient’s age.
  • Incorporates cultural and developmental needs into plan of care.
  • In collaboration with the patient/family, and in a developmentally and culturally appropriate manner, implements the plan of care.
  • Demonstrates competency in the provision of nursing care according to established standards of nursing practice and in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills, ability to provide and delegate activities to staff based on patient assessment and the requirements to deliver care in a safe efficient manner maximizing positive outcomes for the patient.
  • Provides documentation of patient care in the patient record according to established standards of nursing care.

Qualifications


REQUIREMENTS

  • Texas RN license
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Three (3) years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • One (1) year experience as a Charge Nurse.
  • Current BLS, ACLS and PALS Certification
  • BLS upon hire and ACLS & PALS 

EDUCATION

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE

  • Texas RN license
  • Three (3) years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • One (1) year experience as a Charge Nurse.
  • Current BLS, ACLS and PALS Certification
  • BLS upon hire and ACLS & PALS 

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to write concise, legible documentation in patient’s medical record.
  • Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures.
  • Rhythm recognition, knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing. Ability to work with other members of the healthcare team to meet patient’s needs.
  • Ability to interact in a positive manner and to communicate well with patients, families, coworkers, employees, supervisors and other hospital employees.
