Position General Summary

Performs a variety of duties related to painting of buildings and associated facilities; performs related duties as required. The Painter is responsible for painting buildings and facilities from preparation of surfaces through the cleanup. The position is located in the Ada County Operations Department.

Essential Functions

Paints walls and a variety of other surfaces by using standard coating methods such as brushing, rolling, and spraying;

Apply stains and does lettering and sign painting;

Prepares walls for and installs various types of wall coverings;

Redecorates interior and exterior walls, woodwork, and fixtures;

Mixes, applies, and finishes plaster to surfaces in the minor repair of walls and ceilings;

Patches holes and sands and smooths area to be treated;

Masks off windows, doors, lights, or other needed items;

Replaces windows and glass;

Makes material lists and orders materials;

Cleans up equipment and area where work was performed;

Instructs employees in the proper use of equipment and proper painting techniques;

Maintains and repairs related painting equipment;

Keeps track of and accounts for all tools and equipment brought into detention facilities.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

May patch, tape and texture sheetrock;

May estimate time and materials required to complete a job(s);

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Must have at least 5 years previous experience as a painter;

Knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques for painting;

Knowledge of the use of painting equipment such as airless and conventional spray gun;

Knowledge of color coordinating;

Knowledge of paint characteristics and their proper uses;

Knowledge of safety precautions necessary to perform the job duties;

Knowledge of techniques and procedures involved in the repair of walls;

Knowledge of how to add, subtract, multiply, divide and work with simple fractions to measure material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions;

Skill in the proper use of brushes and rollers to apply paint and other related materials;

Ability to operate, and clean a variety of painting tools;

Ability to use toxic materials such as thinners and special paints;

Ability to maintain painting equipment;

Ability to prepare materials to use when painting or staining different items or areas;

Ability to instruct others in the proper use of paints and related tools;

Ability to operate scissor lifts, man lifts and aerial lifts;

Ability to operate motor vehicles (including light trucks) safely in order to travel to the job site;

Ability to understand and follow verbal or written instructions.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to use basic computer programs such as MS Word and Outlook preferred;

Must be self-motivated and able to complete tasks with minimal supervision;

Typical schedule is Monday-Friday however the incumbent may be required to adjust work schedule to include weekends, and/or before and after normal business hours to accommodate painting schedule;

Must be able to be reached by telephone after hours;

Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid Idaho drivers license;

Must pass a Sheriff's Office security clearance (criminal records) check, and fingerprinting;

Must be able to support and work at all county facilities and buildings;

May be assigned to special assignments as need;

This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and works on items that may be in hard to reach places;

The incumbent may be required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions in confined spaces for long periods of time;

Uses tools and ladders, which require care to avoid injury;

The incumbent frequently carries tools and equipment and may be required to lift up to 50lbs;

The work is performed inside and outside, and dirt, spray and fumes are often present;

Much of the work will be performed in and around a jail facility and involves an element of personal danger;

Must be able to quickly move out of the way when a confrontation (real or potential) with inmate(s) occurs;

May be exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, burns, cuts and bruises.
