Position: School Nurse

QUALIFICATIONS AND DUTIES OF THE SCHOOL NURSE POSITION:

SCHOOL NURSE QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Properly Licensed 2. Experience in Public Health Nursing; 3. Rapport with Public Service Agencies; 4. Other qualifications determined to be necessary by the Board of Education.

REPORTS TO : School Principal – Immediate Supervisor Superintendent of Schools – General Supervisor

JOB GOAL: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunities for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the district schools.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Develop school health education programs and service for grades kindergarten through 12th and implements School Based Health Services. 2. Develop and implement a Drug Educational and Health Education Program and Curriculum. 3. Conduct school programs of immunization, physical examinations, and sight and hearing testing by the given timeline. 4. Observe students on a regular basis to detect health defects. 5. Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students. 6. Report as the need arises, to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters, as directed by the chief medical officer. 7. Instruct teachers on screening students for health defects. 8. Participate in filling out time study for Medicaid reimbursement. 9. Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness. 10. Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures. 11. Make recommendations to school officials on the health needs of individual students. 12. Implement policy on exclusions and re-admissions of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases. 13. Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools. 14. Provide in-service training programs/conducts presentations in Drug Free Programs, Health Programs, Child and Substance Abuse Programs, Nutrition Programs, Wellness programs and First Aid/CPR Training, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc. 15. Comply with competencies for Nurses and Health Instructors as approved by the Public Education Department. 16. Participate in the Student Assistance Team Committee process and curriculum alignment, benchmarks, performance standards/assessments and implement EPSS. Will also participate in Parent and Community Involvement and Safety Plans. 17. Attend assigned Meetings and provide input on IEP’s for resource students. 18. Help write proposals for grant funding when health RFP’s are available. 19. Attend board meetings as requested by the Superintendent or his/her authorized designee. 20. Perform other assigned tasks as may be deemed appropriate and necessary by the Supervisor(s).

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Work schedule and hours to be established by the Board of Education on an annual basis, through the recommendation of the Superintendent.

SALARY: Salary to be established by the Board of Education on an annual basis, through the adoption of the salary schedules.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the adopted board policies. To be evaluated by School Principals.
