ABC News is Hiring a VP - DC News Bureau Chief Near Washington, DC

The Washington D,C. Bureau Chief will manage all news teams based in Washington, D.C and will be responsible for leading and driving collaboration between our powerhouse politics team and all DC reporting verticals to execute a winning strategy for both breaking news and day-to-day coverage.
The right candidate will be a strong leader who believes collaboration across divisions and departments, our owned stations and affiliates makes coverage stronger and better. The Bureau Chief will help set the news agenda and editorial vision out of Washington so that all platforms at ABC News are competitive.

In addition to editorial responsibilities, the bureau chief will oversee bureau operations and manage key stakeholder relationships inside and outside of the organization in Washington. The ideal candidate will be a smart communicator who can serve as an ambassador and protector of our straightforward ABC brand.

The Bureau Chief will report to the Vice President of Global Newsgathering.

Responsibilities:

  • Use strong editorial judgment to guide decisions during breaking news situations and daily coverage in Washington, D.C. that align with the larger ABC News mission and vision
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in editorial, operations, administration, human relations, etc. to deliver strong coverage for ALL platforms
  • Manage a team of newsgathering leaders to ensure that as we lead in our coverage, we also make our people our priority by creating a positive work environment that fosters respect, growth, trust and transparency
  • Champion innovation, collaboration, creativity and diversity that lead to stronger story ideas and coverage that reflects our audiences and drives viewership
  • Work with the talent department and ABC News leadership to develop our on-air talent and off-air talent
  • Prioritize feedback that leads to performance growth and career development
  • Build significant external relationships in the Washington, D.C. area that benefit ABC News storytelling
  • Responsible for managing the overall budget of the Washington Bureau


Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong, inclusive relationship builder with experience working across a matrixed organization at all levels
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, encouraging collaboration and sharing of ideas
  • Proven record of exercising strong editorial judgment
  • Extensive knowledge of the Washington political scene
  • Ability to make quick decisions in breaking news situations
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated experience identifying new ways of producing and covering news and seeking out new strategies
  • Experience working with on-air talent


Required Education:

  • BA or equivalent work experience

The hiring range for this position in Washington D.C. is $297,800 to $409,400 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
