Schedule: Full Time, M-F 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, rotating weekends, paid holidays

We are seeking a motivated Purchaser with a passion for people and teamwork to join our Team. The position is people focused, fast paced, rewarding. The Purchaser is responsible for purchasing inventory and supplies for their assigned categories and for the coordination with the stores of all items within the assigned inventory categories to insure common vendors and core inventories.

The annual salary is dependent on experience and overall knowledge of the position.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as 41 Lumber’s representative and treat all customers and third parties in a courteous and friendly manner
  • Be alert to possible sales opportunities and relay them to the Store Manager
  • Purchase and maintain adequate inventories for items stocked by the Company with inventory categories assigned using the minimum/maximum system that is coordinated with the Store Managers.
  • Regularly evaluate all items within assigned inventory categories to determine the most effect way to purchase.
  • Evaluate assigned inventory item’s gross profit, performance ratio and turns on a regular basis. Suggest new inventory items for addition to and deletions of non-performing inventory items.
  • Transfer overstocks as needed to balance yard inventories
  • Keep up to date on all areas of inventory stocked by the Company
  • Coordinate deliveries and transfers with Store Manager
  • Prepare order documents in a timely manner to ensure proper documentation is ready for receiving and billing (customer orders, PO’s, transfers and credits).
  • Schedule inventory transfers and off site inventory pick-ups (i.e. railcars) with OTR companies.
  • Establish retail prices for assigned categories of inventory using approved margins set for the Company. Arrange for inbound freight as required. Negotiate contract terms and pricing. Research potential vendors. Negotiate and maintain relationships with over-the-road (OTR) trucking companies for inventory pick up and transfer
  • Develop and maintain superior knowledge of all products stocked by 41 Lumber and its suppliers; be able to properly demonstrate and recommend the use and application of these products.
  • Maintain a complete and thorough knowledge of all vendor products and websites in order to make recommendations to customers.
  • Utilize contacts and websites to source unfamiliar product requests
  • Assist the stores in purchasing special order items as required
  • Assist the stores in competitive shopping
  • Assist team members by making sales calls with them when requested by the Store Manager
  • Report all customer complaints to the Store Manager
  • Assist in developing an effective sales plan for the store that will achieve sales and gross margin goals
  • Physically be able to: walk and stand on the job for extended periods of time; frequently bend, squat, reach, lift, carry, push and pull as necessary
  • Assist with inventory control and annual physical inventory
  • Stock inventory as required and accept deliveries
  • Be active in the community; join a builders exchange, service club, or volunteer group
  • Participate and attend events (i.e. trade shows, trainings, factory tours, etc.)

Education: Specific requirements of the person who performs the job of the Purchaser are as follows:

1. Education and Experience

a. Bachelor’s degree in business in a business related field of study or five years equivalent experience. Experience including:

i. Purchasing officer, purchasing agent or similar role

ii. Knowledge of vendor sourcing practices (researching, evaluating, and liaising with vendors)

iii. Retail or wholesale sales experience

iv. Hands-on experience with purchasing software

v. Understanding of supply chain procedures

vi. Analytical and logistic skills with the ability to conduct cost analyses

vii. Negotiation skills High school diploma or experience in a similar role

OR

Experience: five years equivalent experience in a business related field
