Job Description JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Director- Oklahoma Department of Mines DATE: May 2023 REPORTS TO: Oklahoma Mining Commission JOB SUMMARY: Under direction of the Oklahoma Mining Commission, assumes responsibilities for all functions of the Oklahoma Department of Mines activities and supervises all agency staff, as specified under Title 45. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Be responsible for organizing the Department of Mines to achieve the objectives of the Commission and the agency. Supervises Chief Financial Officer, General Counsel, Program Chiefs and all support staff. Represents the Department at the discretion of the Oklahoma Mining Commission. Provides assistance, advice and counsel to the Oklahoma Mining Commission on significant matters relating to the Department in order to achieve the objectives of the Commission. Prepares a personnel schedule, employs staff and defines their duties and fixes salaries, and appoints technicians and consultants. Administers all policies formulated and adopted by the Oklahoma Mining Commission. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves on national boards and commissions as the authorized State representative of mining and safety matters, as requested. Appoints a miner certification advisory council. Assists the Oklahoma Mining Commission in their advisory capacity concerning the operations of the Oklahoma Miner Training Institute. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must be a resident and qualified elector of Oklahoma for 3 years preceding appointment. Proven record of effective staff supervision. Mining, Reclamation, and Health & Safety experience preferred. Hold a Bachelor of Arts or science degree, including 5 years supervisory/managerial experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of mining regulation and inspection law. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills: able to work well with a wide range of people. Basic computer skills for interagency communications. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This work is primarily sedentary and requires the following physical activities: Sitting for long periods of time; occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, stooping; good finger dexterity and feeling; frequent repetitive motions; talking, hearing, and visual acuity. Keyboarding or data entry for up to 4 hours per workday. Occasional lifting (up to 35 pounds of paper supplies or minor office equipment). Occasional field visits; ability to walk one mile or more at a time. WORKING CONDITIONS Normal office environment. Occasional travel required. Driver’s license required.
