RNFA’s works under the direction and in collaboration with the surgeons during the intraoperative phase of the perioperative experience and in accordance with the Standard of Practice and within the guidelines of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. The RNFA is responsible for establishing and maintaining a sterile field, a safe patient care environment, and appropriate supplies/equipment as required for the operative procedure. The RNFA functions as a cooperative health care team member in a critical care environment treating the patient in a holistic manner with dignity and respect. The RNFA is responsible for collaborating with the surgeon and health care team members to perform safe surgical procedures with optimal outcomes for the patient. Major Responsibilities: Provide first or second assisting for specified surgical procedures as needed and assigned for patients of all ages. Assuring/Improving Quality Care: Facilitates the patient and family’s right to receive quality, cost effective care Nursing Process: Demonstrates the use of nursing process as a problem-solving model Patient/Staff Education: Demonstrates a commitment to meeting the learning needs of patients and families. Utilizes appropriate resources to meet those needs and achieve positive patient outcomes. Assists in creating an environment that promotes educational growth opportunities for nursing peers and colleagues. Leadership/Collaboration/Professional Development: Demonstrates respect and understanding for peers and other clinical disciplines and participates as an effective member of the patient care team to formulate an integrated approach to care. Demonstrates leadership behaviors and is committed to the development of self and others. Nurse/Patient Relationship: Develops and maintains a therapeutic relationship throughout the healthcare continuum Licensure: Nurse, Registered (RN) Education/Experience Required: BSN required 3 years of perioperative experience completion of RNFA program current licensure as an RN Graduate of an accredited school of nursing Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required: Good communication skills Ability to independently perform scrub duties CPR certification CNOR/CRNFA Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: May be exposed to body fluids, waste and chemicals, anesthesia gases, hazardous materials, radiation, and life-threatening diseases This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients treated, i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior and look for signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred Ability to stand for long periods of time Ability to lift 50 pounds Ability to cooperate and work well with others Ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others Ability to work in a stressful, changing environment Ability to respond quickly to emergencies. Ability to respond to fire and other codes (e.g. evacuate patients) Ability to work designated shifts including weekends and holidays Ability to assume on-call responsibility If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.
