PRN status, shifts can range from 4, 10 or 12 hour shifts, weekends as needed. 1 Summer and 1 Winter Holiday shift.

Education / Experience Required :

  • EMT-B, EMT-P, CMA or CNA, AND 2-3 years of healthcare related experience preferred or pre-hospital patient care experience or
  • completion of 1-2 years of nursing school clinical rotations or
  • acceptance at an accredited medical school AND 2 - 3 years of healthcare related experience preferred or Medical Assistant certification AND 2 - 3 years healthcare related experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required :

  • Good communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Familiarity with copier& fax equipment
  • Good customer service skills
  • Competent patient care with ADLs
  • Ability to accurately take vital signs
  • Ability to address patient / family needs
  • EMT-B, EMT-P, CNA, CMA certification, and or completion 1-2 years of nursing clinical rotations or medical school or or Medical Assistant certification AND 2 - 3 years healthcare related experience preferred
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support certification.

Major Responsibilities :

Provides quality patient care and supports the operational needs of the clinic. 1)Accurately obtains and documents patient history, intake information including chief complaint, vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure) as needed.

Conducts appropriate pain assessment and obtains pulse oximeter readings. Assists physician with exam as needed. 2)Obtains 12 lead EKG as needed, sends tracing out for interpretation and documents appropriately.

3)Performs laboratory functions : Collects and prepares specimens for testing, performs routine in-house lab tests, performs and documents quality controls, records lab results and tests performed in log and on chart.

Informs physicians or RN of abnormal or panic values. 4)Performs venipuncture per procedure / standards using aseptic technique with minimal trauma to vein.

Able to identify appropriate tube colors and operate centrifuge as indicated for specific procedures. 5)Demonstrates ability to utilize medical equipment appropriately (EKG, etc.

6)Coordinates the flow of patients into and out of the department in accordance with established departmental procedures.

7)Cleans, stocks and prepares rooms. Maintains inventory of medical supplies. 8)Assists in the gentle restraint of children during nursing and or medical procedures as needed.

9)Cleans simple wounds, irrigates wounds and applies dressings or splints as needed. 10)Documents appropriately in the medical record

Serves as a liason with occupational health clients. Coordinates, and ensures excellent care and service to occupational health companies.

1)Performs responsibilities for occupational health. Familiar with occupational health agreements as evidenced by reading agreements and performing tests accurately.

Accurately performs breath alcohol testing, and completes BAT documentation according to regulations and departmental guidelines.

Performs audiometry, spirometry, EKG, vision and other tests as specified by company agreement. 2)Accurate collection and completion of urine drug screen specimens using chain of custody procedures and appropriate selection of drug screen kit and chain of custody form as specified by the company agreement.

3)Provides accurate and timely results of testing to companies. Maintains appropriate records for occupational health companies and patients.

Logs physicals and drug screens. Tracks drug screen results and communicates results to companies. 4)Serves as a liason between Advocate and the occupational health company.

Maintains, updates, and creates occupational health agreements as needed. 5)Participates in off-site drug screens, blood draws, and health fairs as needed.

6)As appropriate, registers patients for occupational health services 7)As appropriate, coordinates occupational health off-site events, providing information on services that we can provide and completing agreements 8)Maintains all equipment (BAT, spirometry, etc.

Demonstrates commitment to providing quality and safe patient care by participating in performance / process improvement and adherence to all accepted safety standards and practices to ensure patient safety and quality patient care.

1)Assists in the development and implementation of improvement processes as applicable. 2)Participates in performance improvement activities.

Demonstrates commitment to quality by achieving compliance on primary responsibilities and expectations. 3)Performs clerical duties such as maintaining adequate patient records, answering phones, scheduling examinations, giving instructions to patients in preparation for examinations to provide smooth and continuous departmental services.

4)Demonstrates proper body mechanics in carrying out job responsibilities. 5)Utilizes preventative measures and maintains compliance with established safety standards to protect patients and staff at all times.

Identifies potential and actual problems which put people at risk for injury. 6)Adheres to all policies, procedures and regulatory expectations.

Understands and follows HIPAA, other regulations and standard, hospital and departmental policies and procedures. 7)Communicates regarding broken, missing or damaged equipment to appropriate department for prompt replacement or repair.

Labels as malfunctioning and reports malfunctioning equipment. 8)Promotes patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.

Demonstrates professional behavior, follows customer service expectations and participates as a collaborative member of the patient care team.

1)Provides competent, appropriate and timely service to all customer groups. Consistently practices good internal customer service, remembering that peers, patients and physicians are customers.

2)Greets everyone appropriately (utilizes good eye contact, smiles, verbal acknowledgement). Introduces self and explains role.

3)Supports the team environment and collaborates with team members. Works well as a team player. 4)Communicates pertinent information and any information regarding delays with patients and families.

Disseminates accurate and complete information to all inquiries regarding patient care, hours, services, programs, etc. 5)Serves as a positive role model for peers and staff.

Demonstrates support of the organization, department and staff through all words and actions. Displays pleasant personality and positively contributes to department morale.

6)Anticipates the needs of the department and others. Modifies work schedule to cover vacancies, assists on special projects or meet work deadlines.

7)Observes guidelines concerning dress, display of name badge and presents an appearance appropriate to the work environment.

Assists in keeping environment neet and orderly. 8)Demonstrates initiative by identifying opportunities for improvement and works collaboratively with the patient care team to develop and implement solutions.

9)Assists with patient call backs. 10)Participates in problem solving issues addressing patients, department operations, quality assurance procedures, interdepartmental relations, and employee morale.

Participates in educational opportunities to increase professional competence. Provides instruction and orientation to technologists as needed.

1)Provides direction and instruction to patient care technicians in need of assistance with specific direction 2)Certifies patient care technicians and staff on spirometry, DOT drug screens, etc.

3)If applicable, as a preceptor, collaborates with others to individualize the orientation plan for new departmental employees.

4)Presents or coordinates inservices for staff. 5)Recognizes own needs for continued learning and assumes responsibility for own continuing education.

6)Independently completes mandatory annual education requirements and follows through and meets deadlines for competencies.

7)Attends at least 50% of department meetings, classroom education and independantly completes online learning in a timely manner.

Participates in opportunities to grow and develop in position and improve the department.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions :

  • Ability to adapt to changes in work assignments and environment ?Ability to lift 50 pounds ?Ability to frequently stoop, bend, push, pull, climb, lift and demonstrate manual dexterity for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and assist with the movement of heavy patients and or equipment, up to 300 pounds with assistance. ?Ability to adapt to changes in work assignments and environment ?

Possible exposure to infectious waste and disease ?Ability and willingness to work on all shifts, weekends, and holidays in patient care areas ?

Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time (stand and / or walk 80% of the time; sit 20% of the time, depending on assignment) ?

Ability to kneel and bend ?Ability to assist in evacuation of patients in the event of fire or other disaster

If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06 / 01 / 2015.

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.

Unique patient lifting / movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
