Consider becoming a Bilingual Spanish Library Access Services Assistant! As a Bilingual Spanish Library Access Services Assistant, you will provide library services to both patrons and staff with a specific focus on assisting those who speak Spanish. Your duties will range from materials movement and performing library support duties to assisting with circulation and account management, however, your main focus will be materials management. Some of your duties may include: Checking in book drop and properly shelving materials in library stacks. Providing account management assistance, including clearly explaining policies and procedures to patrons. Assisting patrons with balances due, including accepting payment, providing positive options, and negotiating and waiving charges when appropriate. Maintaining, troubleshooting, and teaching internal and external customers how to use equipment such as computers, copiers, check-out stations, credit card payment machines and cash registers. Preparing meeting rooms or other designated areas for programs. Helping with opening and/or closing a library location, ensuring the location is organized and safe for operations. Bridging the gaps due to cultural differences with the Spanish speaking community This is a physically demanding position. You will frequently lift and move items such as crates and stacks of books. You may also set up tables, chairs, computer and audiovisual equipment for programs and meetings. You must be able to work in a standing position for extended periods, kneel, reach, bend, and constantly grasp and lift materials from one to 15 pounds (and frequently lift 35 to 50 pounds). This position requires someone with the ability to work respectfully and capably with people from all backgrounds and age groups. You must demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor while working with customers, co-workers and community. In providing customer service, you may encounter situations that require de-escalation or assistance from a supervisor or person-in-charge. Your ability to exercise quick and mature judgment in dealing with potentially disruptive, physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies is crucial. To Qualify We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless an item or section is labeled required. Please be clear and specific about how your background is relevant. Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills: Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent. One year of customer service experience involving public contact Knowledge of, or extensive experience, with the Spanish speaking community, demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values, and customs of the community being served. Must speak, write and read fluently in both English and Spanish languages. Ability to pass a criminal records check, should a job offer be extended. Results of the records check will be reviewed on an individualized basis. A conviction is not an automatic bar to employment.
