HealthPoint has been a pioneer in the implementation of the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model for over 20 years and has been training psychology students for over 15 years. The goal of the PCBH model is to improve and promote overall health within the general clinic population. Our clinics see patients across the age range, pediatrics to geriatrics. Patients are referred to our Psychology Residents for all types of behavioral concerns, including coping with chronic illnesses, like diabetes, obesity, and chronic pain; lifestyle modification regarding exercise, diet, and smoking cessation; and "psychological" problems such as anxiety, depression, and the whole range of mental health disorders. Many patients are also seen for sub-clinical problems, such as stress, parent-child interactions, homelessness, and treatment non-adherence. Psychology Residents are fully integrated psychologists that work alongside primary care providers and their medical team to collaborative in providing screening, consultation, and brief interventions to patients.

Position Summary:

  • This position is a 1-year (12 month) Residency program with an annual stipend of $60,000.
  • Identifies, triages and co-manages patients with medical and behavioral health problems within the primary care setting. Provides skill training through psychoeducation and patient education strategies and will develop specific behavioral change plans for patients and behavioral health protocols for target populations.
  • Assist primary health care providers in recognizing and treating mental disorders and psychosocial problems, and behavioral medicine problems.
  • Assessment and triage: conduct initial screening visit of 30 minutes or less, evaluate level of functioning, determine risk level, assist with diagnosis and behavioral management of HealthPoint patients.
  • Work with primary care team to treat and manage patients with chronic emotional and/or health problems efficiently and effectively assisting in the development of plans to prevent further psychological or physical deterioration.
  • Work with primary care provider to refer cases to mental health specialists as appropriate.
  • Evaluate patient care plans with primary care team.
  • Teach patient's self-care. Teach families and health center staff techniques for patient care. Teach patients and health center staff techniques for prevention of risks to the well-being of the patient and techniques for treatment enhancement of the patient.
  • Conduct group classes and group visits to promote skill building, education, and improved health for the patient.
  • Monitor the site's behavioral health program, identifying problems related to patient services, making recommendations for improvement, and identify linkages to beneficial community resources and external specialty services.
  • Assist in the evaluation of the behavioral health program: review utilization data, establish outcomes to measure quality of life improvements, and cost effectiveness of population-based programming.

Must have's you'll need to be successful:

  • Completion of a doctoral degree in a psychology related field at an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited university.
  • Completion of a pre-doctoral internship at an APPIC and/or APA approved internship site.
  • Washington licensed/license (LMHCA) eligible.
  • Experience in a health care/medical setting is encouraged.
  • Proof of vaccination for COVID-19 is required, prior to start.All new employees are also required to show proof of immunizations and/or immunity to MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Varicella, annual Influenza and TB QuantiFERON Gold Titer. Additionally, if you work in a HealthPoint clinic, Tdap (within last 10 years) is required. Hepatitis B. is required for clinical employees with potential exposure to blood/blood products. All immunizations are a condition of employment. Upon hire, employees must provide proof of their immunizations and/or immune titer results prior to starting or no later than their fifth (5) business day of employment.
