Job Description

Position Overview 

The Lead Mechanical Engineer will have a background in advanced technology or industrial manufacturing facilities engineering and design. The Lead Engineer works independently on various projects as assigned by the Department Manager, Discipline Director, or Project Manager and is responsible for overseeing the entire mechanical design process and assists as a technical expert on specialized design projects within the Semiconductor, Data Center, Solar, and Electric Vehicle/Battery industries. The Lead Mechanical Engineer may work on several concurrent projects and is recognized as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the Mechanical Engineering Discipline. This role may include some management responsibility.

This position is based in Phoenix, AZ. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on advanced technology facilities and related assigned projects. 
  • Conduct feasibility studies and provide technical expertise in the evaluations of applicable systems. 
  • Assess the requirements of a project, break a project into tasks, and work with a Project Manager to determine the scope of work, budget, and staffing. 
  • Write scopes of work based on preliminary review and meetings with the client. 
  • Prepare engineering studies and schematic designs for new systems and analyze the operation of existing systems. 
  • Work with code officials and other design professionals when an interpretation or exception to building codes is required. 
  • Assign and review the work of the project design team. Check the progress of work and alert the Project Manager to change of scope or additional services. 
  • Review contractor applications for payments, utilizing a thorough understanding of the construction process. 
  • Coordinate all aspects of project document completion internally and externally with clients and other design professionals.
  • Prepare or review construction budgets based on experience and scope of project.
  • Assist in the education and development of design staff and act as a resource for design questions. 
  • Utilize computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. 
  • Provide drawings for own designs and produce sketches to incorporate in drawings by drafters. 
  • Research design options and document findings for Project Designer/Engineer. 
  • Ensure that drawings and designs are in accordance with company production and design standards. 
  • Provide indirect supervision of small to medium-sized teams or manage a small team of direct reports consisting of Engineers, Designers, and Drafters as needed as an extension of the Department Manager. 
  • Special projects as assigned. 

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with proven experience in mechanical engineering and systems design for advanced technology industrial manufacturing and related facilities projects. Direct experience working for A/E or EPCM consultancy is strongly preferred. A typical minimum level of experience can be 10 years. 
  • Registered Professional Engineer required. 
  • Expertise in computer operation for engineering design programs and computer-aided drafting. Proficiency in using standard engineering, CADD, and business software including but not exclusive to AutoCAD, Revit, BIM/3D platforms, MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to lead the development and creation of flow diagrams, P&IDs, thermal load calculations, equipment selections, central utility plants, distribution sizing and distribution routing.
  • Ability to coordinate designs with other pertinent disciplines, as well as work with a construction team to develop and review designs.
  • Experience with the design of facility mechanical systems, such as air handling systems, hazardous exhaust systems, exhaust scrubbing systems, and hydronic central utility plants is a must. Experience with process gas piping systems is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of industry-specific codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Experience with hazardous area classifications, and building automation systems is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams and clients. Possess experience leading and willingness to manage small to medium-sized teams either as direct or indirect reports. 
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
