Job Title

Echocardiograph Technician

Reports To

The Echocardiograph Technician position will report directly to the Clinical Managers.

Position Summary

The Echocardiograph Technician performs required ultrasound and clinical evaluations at a technical level requiring limited or no supervision. The technologist will maintain a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of cardiac and/or vascular diseases as they evolve. To perform adult echocardiograms, treadmill, and testing.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Performs imaging and non-imaging evaluations.

  • Perform M-Mode, 2D, 3D, and stress echo.
  • Follows protocols and can deviate from normal techniques when clinically necessary.
  • Selects appropriate equipment and transducer frequency/size for proper examination.
  • Operates complex ultrasound equipment and remain familiar with the technology the system possesses.
  • Relays preliminary findings and/or final reports to the proper referring physician according to policy

Assumes responsibility for patient care.

  • Obtains patient history, explains procedures to patient, addresses patients’ concerns, and follows established pre-screening policy and procedures. Consults with the referring physician and/or patient chart regarding patient history as needed.
  • Prepares patient for echocardiography procedures, positions patient as appropriate for prescribed procedure, and assists patients at completion of procedure.
  • Provides images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation. Logs all procedures in the patient roster and logs all echo-related procedures in logbook.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Ensures a professional work culture; professional manner, highest levels of confidentiality, and exemplary customer service.

Maintains Echo image files and supplies for department.

  • Keeps track of which echo studies have been dictated by the interpreting physician and which have been received.
  • Enters the diagnostic coding on tickets and copies these for the Echo files before physician review.
  • Provides a summary of technical findings and reviews these findings with interpreting physician.
  • Maintains ultrasound equipment, work areas and adequate work supplies; orders supplies, when necessary.
  • Performs recordkeeping and archiving of computerized images.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Maintains Florida Licenses and Certifications as required.
  • Annual OSHA, HIPPA training/certifications.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Participates in continuing education programs.
  • Assists in orientation of new staff members.

Education

  • A college degree (non-technical discipline) or (2) multi-craft skills acquired through extensive on-the-job training or apprenticeship programs or (3) in-depth industry and job specific technical skills acquired through a combination of formal instruction and on-the-job training.

Work Experience

  • Three years to five years of similar or related experience.

Licenses/Certification

  • Florida License as required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) registered in Adult Echocardiography (RDCS) or Credentialing International (CCI) Echocardiography

Knowledge

  • Knowledge with a solid foundation in Echocardiography.

  • Well organized.
  • Able to correctly operate all related medical equipment

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently requires full range of body motion included in handling patients. Manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination required. Frequently requires lifting items weighing 35 lbs. or more; sometimes required to help move patients from wheelchairs to tables and back to chairs.

Interpersonal Skills

  • A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others

Work Environment

  • Environmentally controlled medical office environment: Work hours subject to office needs to ensure coverage during all hours of operation; Exposure to radiation which is minimized using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective lead aprons, gloves and other shielding devices and monitored by radiation badges. Possible exposure to bodily fluids; Possible exposure to infectious specimens, communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a laboratory and medical office environment; May wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves or a mask; Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies and other members of the public.
