Position Information: TCS is looking to hire a Material/Process Tech I, II or III to work in our San Antonio field office. This position will be working in materials testing in a laboratory setting and evaluating roadway material, inspecting manufacturing processes and contributing to the process of building and maintaining highways. Position Descriptions

Material/Process Tech I: Performs routine material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that requires minimal supervision of details.

Material/Process Tech II: Performs routine and non-routine material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all issues are referred to the supervisor.

Material/Process Tech III: Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties - Material/ Process Tech I:

• Assists in maintaining equipment.
• Assists in preparing material designs for concrete, hot mix asphaltic concrete, base, aggregate, and other materials.
• Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement.
• Informs plant personnel of material or production problems and rejects substandard material.
• Keeps equipment mileage and service records and schedules equipment repairs.
• Performs routine material tests and inspects manufacturing processes and plant equipment in a manufacturing plant to ensure materials conform to specifications.
• Performs tests and inspection duties.
• Prepares inspection and/or test reports.
• Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
• Cleans laboratory.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Duties - Material/Process Tech II (all the above and):

• Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
• Well versed in ASTM & TxDOT test procedures for soils, aggregates, concrete and HMAC.
• Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining cause for material problems.
• Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
• Plans, coordinates, performs or directs inspections in remote areas.

Essential Duties - Material/Process Tech III (all the above and):

• Independently performs advanced material tests, inspects manufacturing processes and plant equipment in a manufacturing plant or inspects materials at point of supply to ensure conformance to specifications.
• Maintains and calibrates equipment.
• Maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned office.
• Plans, coordinates, assigns, monitors and reviews the work of technical employees.
• Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
• Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
• Travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs, meet with supervisors and managers to resolve problems and perform unannounced inspection of operations.

Minimum Qualifications: (All positions)

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience - Material/Process Tech I: 2 years laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering-related activities.

Experience - Material/Process Tech II: 3 years laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering-related activities.

Experience - Material/Process Tech III: 4 years laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering-related activities.

Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent. Related college education, relevant military or technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications (All positions)

Preferred certifications or ability to acquire:

• ACI Concrete Strength Testing, ACI Field Grade I, AGG 101
• TXAPA Level 1A, TXAPA Level 1B
• SB 101, SB 102, SB 103, SB 201, and SB 202
• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a vehicle.

Competencies - Material/Process Tech I:

• General knowledge of aggregates and asphalt
• Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
• General knowledge of Laboratory testing procedures and methodologies and field testing
• Nuclear gauge operation
• Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
• Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems including SiteManager
• Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
• Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
• Conducting laboratory tests
• Follow verbal and written instructions
• Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work.
• Reports any safety issues or concerns to management

• Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
• Calibrating equipment

• Applicable laws, rules, and regulations
• Attend and conduct training in a classroom, office, or field environment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
