Teays Valley Local Schools is Hiring an Academic Coach_Math (East MS) Near Ashville, OH

Title: Academic Coach

Department: Education

Building/Facility: Individual Building

Reports to: Building Administrator

Employment Status: Temporary based on annual contract. Retirement benefits only.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Description: The Academic Coach is responsible for tutoring students, either individually or in small groups in academic areas. Additional competencies and details are provided below.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety or students, taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Provide private instruction to individual or small groups of students to improve academic performance, prepare for academic tests, or conduct reading groups.
  • Create individualized student success plans by analyzing testing data, anecdotal reports and classroom performance.
  • Provide academic support in all subject areas (English-Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies)
  • Work with students to provide extra academic support to the lowest 20% or in some cases top 20% of students.
  • Participate in IEP/ETR/RTI/SAT meetings as needed to provide data to families and school officials.
  • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students.
  • Review class material with students by discussing text, working solutions to problems, or reviewing worksheets or other assignments.
  • Monitor student performance or assist students in academic environments, such as classrooms, laboratories, or computing centers.
  • Organize the tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
  • Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or learn new tutoring techniques.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, teachers, school administrators, or counselors to determine student needs, develop tutoring plans, or assess student progress.
  • Communicate students' progress to students, parents or teachers in written progress reports, in person, by phone, or by email.
  • Prepare and facilitate tutoring workshops, collaborative projects, or academic support sessions for small groups of students.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university
  • Teaching License or Substitute Teaching license attainment from Ohio Department of Education


Knowledge

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge or willingness to be trained in various programs such as, but not limited to: Wilson Phonics, SPIRE, LLI, Bridges and CPM math curriculums.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests as well as learning and motivation.


Skills

  • Skilled in instructing, teaching others how to do something.
  • Skilled in active listening, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Skilled in learning strategies, selecting and using training/instruction methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.


Abilities

  • Ability to communicate information and ideas both orally and in writing so others will understand.
  • Ability or willingness to work with special education students.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Regularly required to speak and hear.
  • Required to have dexterity of hands and fingers.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
  • Required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to bend at the waist, kneel or crouch.
  • Occasionally asked to push, pull, lift, or carry under 25 pounds.
  • Occasional interaction among unruly children.
