Title: Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Immediate Supervisor: House Manager/Residential Supervisor

Job Summary

The Direct Support Professional is responsible for maintaining a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment which fosters growth and rehabilitation. The Direct Support professional is responsible for the well-being of residents by providing a secure and responsive environment that enables each individual to maximize their physical, emotional and intellectual capabilities.

The goal of the Direct Support Professional is to facilitate the development of the individual’s ability to reach their highest level of independence. The Direct Support Professional coordinates the services provided in the group home setting which includes assistance in daily living skills, providing proper means and nutrition, upkeep/maintenance of the residence, medication management and providing transportation for individuals.

The Direct Support Professional will maintain high quality clinical documentation, completed in a timely manner and consistent with policies outlined in company handbook and licensure requirements.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provides support to each resident by implementing their annual plan of support, goals and objectives and assists direct support professionals in planning and implementing the annual plan of support.
  • Monitors and reviews individual resident’s progress providing training, supervision and assistance for residents.
  • Provide care to individuals as it relates to social skill development and enhancement.
  • Coordinate and maintain personal schedule of individuals by providing transportation to all appointments (ex. Medical, work, day support, community groups or churches)
  • Create and maintain professional relationships with individuals, their families, case manager, staff members and all other service providers.
  • Monitor residents for any changes in health status, physical or mental.
  • Provide behavioral assistance and intervention for residents.
  • Provide input regarding the provision of support to the residents.
  • Assist with health/personal hygiene and ADLs such as toileting, bathing, dressing, grooming, etc.
  • Provide adequate nutrition by preparing and serving healthy meals.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary home environment by regularly sweeping, mopping, vacuuming etc. and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Providing assistance to residents with domestic duties such as laundry, making beds, maintaining orderly bedrooms.
  • Assist individuals with taking medications.
  • Addressing and resolving all concerns or complaints from residents.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent degree

Required Experience

  • At least one year of experience working with individuals with disabilities or in the human services field (nursing, CNA, rehab services, hospital care, etc.).

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Interpersonal Communication Skills DSP will be in continuous contact with members of other service agencies such as social workers, psychiatrists, court officials, police and other human service professionals. Must be able to communicate effectively orally or in writing.
  • Leadership The Direct Support Professional must consistently demonstrate a positive work ethic and commitment to the organization while demonstrating leadership and team player qualities.
  • Demonstrates organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Diversity DSP will need to be able to appropriately relate to individual personality types utilizing proper judgment and discretion. The DSP typically provides services to highly dysfunctional individuals.
  • Knowledge The Direct Support Professional must possess the knowledge imperative for working the mental health field. The incumbent should be resourceful and able to work independently with very minimal supervision.
  • The Direct Support Professional must be knowledgeable of the medical field and terminology which includes working directly with doctors, nurses, therapists and pharmacists.
  • Knowledge of regulatory agency standards such as DBHDS and DMAS
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals and staff.
  • Ability to be flexible.
  • Demonstrated skill/knowledge in working with individuals and behavioral issues.

Required Training/Licensure

  • Valid state driver's license
  • Driving record in good standing with the DMV.
  • Must possess current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training certification or must be obtained within 14 business days of employment.
  • Must possess current standard First Aid & AED training certification or must be obtained within 14 business days of employment.
  • Human Rights/ID Waiver training or must be completed within 14 business days of employment.
  • Medication Management certification or must be completed within 14 business days of employment.
  • Must possess current non-violent crisis intervention (TOVA) certification - minimum 8 hours or must be obtained within 14 business days of employment.
  • Emergency preparedness.
  • Person-Centered Thinking.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Working Conditions

Work in this field frequently involves working with individuals varying sanitary and health

(emotional and physical) practices and conditions. DSPs may be exposed to hostile and/or aggressive individual behavior, presenting a personal risk of bodily harm.

Candidate must meet eligibility for employment through successful criminal and central registry checks.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 24 per week

Schedule:

  • 12 hour shift
  • Weekends as needed

Education:

  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)

Experience:

  • Caregiving: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:

  • CPR Certification (Preferred)
  • First Aid Certification (Preferred)
  • Driver's License (Preferred)
