Job Description

The Counselor and Coordinator for HEOP reports to the HEOP Executive Director and has broad responsibilities for coordinating and managing many of the operations of the Program. As the primary Counselor for the Program, this individual will be responsible for supporting and mentoring a cohort of up to 50 students, and should be able to provide thoughtful and balanced advice on matters ranging from academic success, social engagement, and life skills within and outside of the College community. As the Program Coordinator, the candidate must be prepared to work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Admission to recruit each year’s class of incoming students. In addition, the Program Coordinator will also have shared responsibility with the Executive Director for the implementation of a mandatory Summer Academy for incoming students. Further, the Coordinator will be responsible for creating, hosting, and managing various student programs/activities throughout the year. The ideal candidate should be someone who is able to interact easily with students, while ensuring that they are accountable for upholding the high academic expectations and ethical values of the Program.

Salary: $62,400

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct assistance to the Executive Director, especially in areas such as recruiting and NYSED state reporting.
  • Meet with students regularly to provide holistic counseling (academic, financial, professional and emotional) and to ensure they are actively engaged in their educational progress
  • Advise and assist students in creating semester schedules in accordance with degree requirements
  • Track students’ progress towards successful completion of degree in collaboration with other academic offices
  • Work closely with Center for Academic Support and Tutoring (CAST) coordinator to facilitate tutoring support for students
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to plan and facilitate workshops and events for HEOP students (such as professional development, mental health, community building, volunteer services, etc.)
  • Plan and facilitate HEOP information sessions and serve as HEOP representative during on and off campus recruitment events in collaboration with the Office of Admission
  • Assist in interviewing and selecting students for the HEOP program
  • Advisor to the HEOP Peer Mentor Program: Hire, train and supervise peer mentors
  • Support the Executive Director with recruitment, training and development of HEOP Leadership Council members and provide guidance as needed
  • Help the Executive Director plan, coordinate and implement the Pre-First-Year Summer Academy
  • Understand and promote the goals and objectives of the HEOP programs throughout the MMC community and the metropolitan area
  • Assist in the collection of student data during preparation of budgets, proposals and reports
  • Supervise hours worked for HEOP Peer Mentors, HEOP Academic Leaders, and Leadership Council members.
  • Actively participate in the statewide HEOP professional organization (HEOPPO) to advance the interests of our Program and to benefit from intra-college networks
  • Perform all other appropriate and relevant duties as assigned by the Executive Director or the Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs

Qualifications and Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree preferred, in a relevant academic discipline such as Psychology, Social Work, Sociology or Higher Education. Minimum Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years of student-centered experience in Higher Education, preferably within educational opportunity programs, such as HEOP
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Strong commitment to student success and academic excellence
  • Ability to problem-solve and work collaboratively with faculty and staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and students, both in written and oral forms
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Word, Excel and other related software tools
  • Availability to work during some evenings and weekends for certain HEOP programs and events.
