JOB TITLE: Sproutside Lead Play Educator

EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, part-time, hourly $12.00

WORK SCHEDULE: Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30/9:30 a.m. – 4:30/5:30 p.m. with occasional evenings
REPORTS TO: Visitor Services Manager

TERMS:

  • Sproutside: An outdoor garden and program area at the Flint Children's Museum where a number of outdoor educational and fun programming is made available for ages 0-8.
  • _ Play Educator: _A member of the FCM staff who welcomes and interacts with families, as the name suggests they are both fun and knowledgeable!

JOB SUMMARY: The Sproutside Lead Play Educator promotes the mission of The Flint Children’s Museum to inspire a lifelong love for learning through the power of play. They provide a quality visitor experience by interacting with children and their caregivers during their visit to the Museum through exhibits, hospitality, and cleanliness. The Sproutside Lead Play Educator models positive and considerate ways to enhance visitors’ overall learning experience through customer service that inspires curiosity, creativity, health and environmental awareness. The Sproutside Lead Play Educator assists the Visitor Service Manager, Lead Play Educator, Director of Exhibits & Maintenance and Gardner while working in conjunction with the Museum Program Team to plan, prep, train and facilitate programming in Sproutside.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Delivers quality customer service by greeting each visitor, offering information, answering questions and providing general visitor assistance.
  • Communicates museum services and policies to visitors regarding general admission, monthly and special programs, field trips, birthday parties, group rentals, memberships, and retail products.
  • Operates cash register to assist visitors with payments and refunds and performs retail merchandising and inventory as required.
  • Provides assistance to visitors in exhibits and through programs as needed to promote and ensure a positive visitor experience.
  • Maintains a safe environment by following and enforcing FCM’s standards and policies.
  • Communicates potential or active problems to the Lead Play Educator, Visitor Services Manager, Director of Exhibits & Maintenance, or the Executive Director as appropriate.
  • Maintains organization, cleanliness, and order with the assistance of Summer Youth Initiative (SYI) staff throughout the day in Sproutside.
  • Works along side the Gardner maintaining gardens & grounds including weeding and watering daily.
  • Supports programs in Sproutside by preparing signage, managing inventory, organizing materials, interacting with families, and cleaning-up stations at end of day.
  • Assist with hiring, orientation, training, and providing productive feedback for evaluations and supervising SYI staff in Sproutside.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings and ongoing trainings and conducts regular team huddles with SYI staff.
  • Maintains a proactive and positive attitude when dealing with inclement weather and makes sure SYI staff is prepared.
  • Keeps SYI staff engaged with children by also modeling what is expected.
  • Keeps SYI staff engaged in meaningful task when museum traffic is low.
  • Completes the Daily Sproutside Cheklist.
  • Remains current with FCM’s policies, standards and communications.
  • Performs additional tasks as requested by Visitor Services Manager, Lead Play Educator, Director of Exhibits & Maintenance or the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Customer Service experience required; experience working with children and families or retail operations preferred. Theatre or other performance experience a plus.
  • Ability to react positively in a fast paced environment and make good decisions under pressure.
  • Transportation and ability to travel.
  • Ability to take direction well and work independently.
  • Basic computer and financial skills necessary including the ability to count money, operate a cash register, reconcile receipts, and gather written and quantitative visitor information.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate in a positive and effective manner with young children (ages 0-8), adults, large groups, Museum staff, and volunteers.
  • Must be motivated, organized, self directed, and service minded.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Work is performed out of doors (up to 90%) and indoors (up to 10%).
  • Must be able to climb, bend, stoop and reach.
  • Must be able to walk and/or stand for long periods.
  • Working in confined spaces is sometimes required.
  • Must be able to push, pull or lift at least 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to read and write various forms of material and recognize symbols and colors.
