Job purpose

The Wig Assistant Over hire is part of a union team that is responsible for assisting in the implementation, and for the care and maintenance of finished/stylized wigs, hair pieces, and makeup designs as used in Denver Center Theatre Company, Education, and Off-Center productions. The Wig Assistant provides hands on assistance with wigs and costumes to actors in their dressing rooms and/or backstage while contributing to the effective and efficient running of all productions and events to the highest standard.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Wig Styling and Maintenance of finished wigs for assigned productions from technical rehearsal through run of show. (Includes wig repair, washing, setting, and styling.)
  • Fill out an individual run sheet and maintain a clean working copy through the run on the shared folder. Assist in building the shows look book.
  • Look over all wig pieces prior to each performance and make sure they are show ready.
  • Ensure presets of wigs and supplies prior to show are placed in their correct positions.
  • Assisting actors with wig prep, putting on wigs, makeup and dressing changes including quick changes. Dressing all female, male, and non-binary actors in the production as assigned by the Wardrobe Supervisor.
  • Assist with preshow load-in and strike.
  • Maintain a clean and safe workspace in all areas of wardrobe and wigs.
  • Collaborate professionally with Supervisors, fellow Wardrobe and Wig team members, Stage Management team, Actors, and Stage crew.
  • Attend rehearsals as needed.
  • Reports to the Wardrobe Supervisor and Wig Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Ideal candidate is self-motivated, and detail oriented with a positive attitude.
  • Must have strong wig styling and maintenance skills.
  • Skillset should include knowledge of all hair and skin types.
  • Knowledge of period hairstyles and makeup.
  • Makeup and special effects skills helpful (knowledge of prosthetics a plus)
  • Must have the ability to execute tasks and collaborate efficiently and in a timely manner.
  • Keeping a well-organized workspace in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Problem solves with the ability to work independently and as part of the team.

Working conditions

This position requires some lifting, stairs, working under tight timelines, problem solving, and flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, student matinees and some holidays and mornings. Must be available to attend all dress rehearsals and performance dates.

Physical requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to handle or feel objects, use tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to work with industry chemicals; stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus in backstage lighting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
