Lecturer in Mathematics (Part-time)
Cornell College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa, is seeking an adjunct Lecturer in Math and Statistics beginning November 2024. A Master's degree is preferred. Experience in teaching Calculus is strongly preferred.
Course and term dates:
Cornell utilizes a block schedule for its courses, so you would teach and students will take this single course full time during the four-week session.
MAT 122: Multivariable Calculus (Block 4: 11/18/24 - 12/18/24). In this course, we emphasize primarily single variable integration techniques, vectors, introduction to vector-valued/multivariable functions, multivariable differentiation, and multivariable integration. Additionally, we discuss different coordinate systems such (as polar coordinates, cylindrical coordinates, and spherical coordinates) and applications of topics (e.g. optimization and physical applications), time permitting. It is worth mentioning that we do not teach sequences and series in this course. We aim to teach students creativity in thinking by viewing a problem from multiple perspectives and to get more comfortable with the multi-directional/geometric nature of multivariable calculus. We use open source material on OpenStax, MyOpenMath, and Desmos for course text, online homework, and to aid with visualizations.
Because Cornell College values diversity and strives to create a welcoming community in which all individuals are respected and included, the entire campus community engages in dialogue around issues of difference, identity, and ideology. Our academic calendar allows us the freedom to structure course time within the block according to the needs of the class without impinging on other course commitments. In addition, this class will have no more than 25 students, and it is supported by professional and student peer consultants in the Quantitative Reasoning Studio.
