The City of Fairburn Police Department is accepting applications for a Police Officer position. The Police Officer is responsible for performing a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws, the protection of persons and property, the prevention of crimes; controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow and enforce State and local regulations; performing specialized police work involving detection, investigation and prosecution of criminal offenders; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Police Department.

Hiring Pay Rate (Police Recruit/ 8-hr Shift):

$24.34 Hourly ($50,625.00 annually)

Hiring Pay Rate (Police Officer Certified /12-hr Shift):

$25.50 Hourly ($55,687.50 annually)

JOB SUMMARY

The is responsible for performing a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws, the protection of persons and property, the prevention of crimes; controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow and enforce State and local regulations; performing specialized police work involving detection, investigation and prosecution of criminal offenders; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Police Department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Patrols assigned areas via motor vehicle or on foot to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations; inspects doors, windows, and premises of residential/commercial buildings/properties to ensure security or to detect suspicious conditions; responds to active alarms at residences, businesses, and industries; takes complaints and prepares detailed reports; maintains high visibility in the community.
  • Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations (including traffic, criminal and civil) in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
  • Enforces vehicle operating laws, parking laws, and DUI laws; uses visual observation and radar/laser speed detection units to enforce speed laws; stops and interviews traffic law violators; issues parking tickets, warnings, or citations; issues parking tickets; searches vehicles when necessary; conducts field sobriety tests; assists stranded motorists or motorists in need of directions.
  • Responds to traffic accidents/complaints; investigates collisions/accidents involving fatalities, personal injuries, and hit-and-run drivers; measures accident scenes and makes drawings of accidents; reviews evidence, reconstructs accidents, and makes recommendations; investigates traffic hazards; coordinates removal of debris or other hazards from roadways.
  • Investigates and secures crime scene for detectives; assists in collecting evidence; assists District Attorney when needed; maintains knowledge of crimes committed; testifies in court; provides court security.
  • Reports and investigates any and all suspicious situations; watches traffic flow; reports broken traffic lights, street and sign damage; chases and captures vicious animals; rescues injured or lost pets.
  • Serves and executes warrants; serves subpoenas issued by the court; works closely with court personnel to ensure warrant is served in a timely manner; communicates with court personnel pertaining to warrants that are unservable.
  • Detect and collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions or indicate the presence of dangerous conditions; process and store evidence and property found at crime scenes; maintain records and enter data into computer as necessary.
  • Process and transport prisoners, suspects and mental patients; take photographs and record fingerprints.
  • Testify in criminal, juvenile, civil courts and DMV hearings; prepare and process court records.
  • Maintain and operate specialized police surveillance equipment including transmitters, radios and cameras; conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
  • Operates a variety of standard/specialized police equipment, motor vehicles, firearms, radar/laser equipment, alcohol testing equipment, restraining devices, communications equipment, personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, Internet, or other computer applications.
  • Attends shift meetings, training sessions, and seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations/activities, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; participates in physical fitness training and continuing education activities; reads professional literature; maintains professional certifications and affiliations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED (or equivalent); supplemented by course work in police science, criminal justice or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses or Certifications:

Valid State of Georgia driver’s license; Georgia Law Enforcement P.O.S.T. certification;

Special Requirements:

Successful completion of one year of probationary service as a police officer with the Fairburn Police Department. Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and an acceptable driving record. This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
  • Knowledge of police methods and procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control and investigation.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure, and preservation.
  • Knowledge of laws governing the apprehension, arrest and custody of accused persons.
  • Knowledge of Use of the S.A.R.A. model of problem solving for addressing community problems.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of law enforcement assignments.
  • Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to use and care for a variety of firearms and other police equipment under stress and from a variety of body positions.
  • Ability to pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations which may involve lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to learn, interpret and enforce State laws and City ordinances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Skill in use of firearms and other modern police equipment.
  • Skill in operation of police equipment and vehicles.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in office and outdoor environments. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, smoke, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, water hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, violence, explosives, firearms, or rude/hostile citizens.
